Die Erforschung der Holocaustliteratur hat Hochkonjunktur. Was aber ist unter dem Begriff eigentlich zu verstehen? Wo ist seine Verwendung sinnvoll, wo stößt sie an Grenzen? Bislang wurde der Terminus weitgehend unreflektiert benutzt, Versuche einer Konzeptualisierung haben in Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft kaum stattgefunden. Insofern beschreitet der vorliegende Band neue Wege. Die Beiträge lassen anhand unterschiedlicher methodischer Näherungen und auf der Grundlage exemplarischen Textmaterials ein umfassendes Bild von der Reichweite und den Grenzen des Begriffs Holocaustliteratur als eines literaturwissenschaftlichen Konzepts entstehen. Dabei wird hinterfragt, wo Funktionalität und Sinnhaftigkeit einer solchen Begrifflichkeit, insbesondere mit Blick auf immer neue und in der zeitgenössischen Literatur vielfältiger werdende Formen der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Genozid, zu verorten sind. Die Beiträge bringen eine wichtige Erkenntnis klar zum Vorschein: Die literaturwissenschaftliche Erforschung der Holocaustliteratur kommt ohne präzise Definition ihres Untersuchungsgegenstandes nicht aus, doch impliziert eine solche Definition keineswegs, dass es sich dabei um ein starres System handelt. Vielmehr erweist sich die Holocaustliteratur als ein in all seinen strukturellen wie funktionalen Facetten veränderliches Phänomen der Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte, das aufgrund seiner thematischen Breite und der Vielfalt ästhetischer Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten zu immer neuen Lektüren und Relektüren einlädt.

In the first chapter on the German military’s unlikely function as an incubator of modernist art and in the second chapter on Adolf Hitler’s advocacy for “eugenic” figurative representation embodying nostalgia for lost Aryan racial perfection and the aspiration for the future perfection of the German Volk, Maertz conclusively proves that the Nazi attack on modernism was inconsistent. In further chapters, on the appropriation of Christian iconography in constructing symbols of a Nazi racial utopia and on Baldur von Schirach’s heretical patronage of modernist art as the supreme Nazi Party authority in Vienna, Maertz reveals that sponsorship of modernist artists continued until the collapse of the regime. Also based on previously unexamined evidence, including 10,000 works of art and documents confiscated by the U.S. Army, Maertz’s final chapter reconstructs the anarchic denazification and rehabilitation of German artists during the Allied occupation, which had unforeseen consequences for the postwar art world.

The beginnings of the teaching concept lie in the 1970s, although there were already tendencies towards this type of writing lessons before that. In the 1990s, action and production orientation found its way into curricula; writing on texts is now an integral part of German lessons. In the following, after a clarification of terms, the most important basic principles of action- and production-oriented literature lessons are to be shown and on the basis of which the necessity of action- and production-oriented German lessons is to be justified. The historical development is then shown and finally some of the action- and production-oriented methods for teaching are presented. The conclusion of the work should be a specially devised project to show how forms of action and production orientation can be realized in the classroom. Schiller's drama Maria Stuart was chosen for this purpose.

The construction of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as an Anglo-American sage and literary icon was the product of a cult of personality that lay at the center of nineteenth-century cultural politics. A reconstruction of the culture wars fought over Goethe’s authority, a previously hidden chapter in the intellectual history of the period ranging from the late eighteenth century to the threshold of Modernism, is the focus of Literature and the Cult of Personality. Marginal as well as canonical writers and critics figured prominently in this process, and Literature and the Cult of Personality offers insight into the mediation activities of Mary Wollstonecraft, Henry Crabb Robinson, the canonical Romantic poets, Thomas Carlyle, Margaret Fuller, George Eliot, Matthew Arnold, and others. For women writers and Jacobins, Scots, and Americans, translating Goethe served as an empowering cultural platform that challenges the myth of the self-sufficiency of British literature. Reviewing and translating German authors provided a means of gaining literary enfranchisement and offered a paradigm of literary development according to which 're-writers' become original writers through an apprenticeship of translation and reviewing. In the diverse and fascinating body of critical writing examined in this book, textual exegesis plays an unexpectedly minor role; in its place, a full-blown cult of personality emerges along with a blueprint for the ideology of hero-worship that is more fully mapped out in the cultural and political life of twentieth-century Europe.
