Excerpt from Our Lady of America: Liturgically Known as Holy Mary of Guadalupe Catholics are convinced that heavenly apparitions some times occur. They see no reason for limiting Divine manifestations to the Old Testament period, or to the age of the Apostles; while they have irresistible motives for accepting some more recent revelations, technically called private or special. Evidently, there is here no question of Catholic Faith for, the matter on which the Church's faith is exercised was all delivered, either orally or in writing, before the death of St. John. Our faith, says St. Thomas, rests on the revelation made to the Apostles and Prophets who wrote the canonical books; but not on any revelation made to other doctors. I It 18 rather an affair of Christian reasonableness, of common sense and consistency. If we are told that somewhere in the Church Our Lord, or His Mother, or an Angel, or a Saint, has appeared, we are not determined to contradict, though we are Often far from ready to believe. They may have Shown themselves, may have deigned to Visit us; in itself the occurrence is neither impossible nor improbable. But the favor is too great, too exceptional, either to be accorded easily or to be easily credited. We want proof and we wait for it. In some cases the proofs are so strong and abundant accompanying proofs, and more still consequent ones - that our reserve melts and we deliberately accept the super natural event. There is doubtless an instinct Of faith and faith's graceful sincerity in our assent. There may even be the merit Of faith, for great theologians2 teach that we can, and sometimes should, exercise the Divine virtue on sufficiently accredited private revelations. Yet.
