La captura conceptual del hombre se ha debatido históricamente entre la unidad o separación de cuerpo y espíritu, de naturaleza y cultura, de biología y técnica. A partir de la obra de dos importantes estudiosos del siglo XX (André Leroi-Gourhan y Arnold Gehlen), se lleva a cabo en este libro un rastreo por importantes vertientes teóricas, con el fin de intentar una comprensión del devenir humano en un tiempo de experimentación límite con el cuerpo. Desde vertientes distintas y con soportes conceptuales dispares, se termina coincidiendo en dos aspectos básicos: el vitalismo para explicar la condición humana y el paralelo hombre-animal para definir de manera integral la naturaleza humana. La pregunta articuladora es: ¿sería posible una definición del hombre que dé cuenta de su situación en el mundo?
