Latin American women’s movements played important roles in the democratic transitions in South America during the 1980s and in Central America during the 1990s. However, very little has been written on what has become of these movements and their agendas since the return to democracy. This timely collection examines how women’s movements have responded to the dramatic political, economic, and social changes of the last twenty years. In these essays, leading scholar-activists focus on the various strategies women’s movements have adopted and assess their successes and failures. The book is organized around three broad topics. The first, women’s access to political power at the national level, is addressed by essays on the election of Michelle Bachelet in Chile, gender quotas in Argentina and Brazil, and the responses of the women’s movement to the “Bolivarian revolution” in Venezuela. The second topic, the use of legal strategies, is taken up in essays on women’s rights across the board in Argentina, violence against women in Brazil, and gender in the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Peru. Finally, the international impact of Latin American feminists is explored through an account of their participation in the World Social Forum, an assessment of a Chilean-led project carried out by women’s organizations in several countries to hold governments to the promises they made at international conferences in Cairo and Beijing, and an account of cross-border organizing to address femicides and domestic abuse in the Juárez-El Paso border region. Jane S. Jaquette provides the historical and political context of women’s movement activism in her introduction, and concludes the volume by engaging contemporary debates about feminism, civil society, and democracy. El humor debe ser algo así como el relato inteligente de un hecho cómico. Aquí lo cómico es el sustrato. Esto es lo que venían a decir los geniales Forges y Mingote: – Uno va por la calle, se cae: eso es lo cómico. –… Lo humorístico es lo que dice después el tío… El discurso humorístico opera siempre en un doble plano, consciente e inconsciente, de significación. Captarlo requiere una apropiada actitud intelectual –la aceptación provisional del esquema cognitivo del chiste que, poco antes del final, se desviará para producir la sorpresa- pero también, como apuntaba Freud, incorpora mecanismos no conscientes que son, precisamente, los que nos preparan para ruptura de la norma y la convención. Eso es lo que convierte al chiste en un hecho social: descubre una transgresión que ya estaba en el ambiente, sólo que difundida en miles de subjetividades. Esto es especialmente cierto ante situaciones de grave déficit de la libertad de expresión, cuando el humor canaliza también una racionalidad alternativa. Pero lo es también en las sociedades democráticas. De hecho el humor se ha vuelto clave en la comunicación política y no sólo por la eficacia que confiere a los mensajes, bien conocida por el mundo publicitario, sino porque se ha instalado, desde el principio mismo de los modernos medios de comunicación, en el corazón del periodismo. Desde las publicaciones satíricas del XIX, hasta las viñetas de Mahoma, pasando por los informativos humorísticos de la TV, la comunicación y el humor han compartido una turbulenta historia, hecha a partes iguales de resistencias y servidumbres al poder. Hay, pues, una racionalidad en el humor que puede ser aprehendida en su relación con la sociedad y el momento en que se produce. Eso es lo que se propone este libro, con aportaciones de investigadores europeos y americanos, que confirman la calidad y madurez que ha alcanzado la investigación de este tema. Un momento brillante de esa madurez fue, sin duda, el XIII Congreso Internacional de la Asociación de Historiadores de la Comunicación, celebrado en octubre de 2013 en Cuenca, algunas de aquellas aportaciones se encuentran en este libro.

Making a vital contribution to the understanding of Latin American modernism, Esther Gabara rethinks the role of photography in the Brazilian and Mexican avant-garde movements of the 1920s and 1930s. During these decades, intellectuals in Mexico and Brazil were deeply engaged with photography. Authors who are now canonical figures in the two countries’ literary traditions looked at modern life through the camera in a variety of ways. Mário de Andrade, known as the “pope” of Brazilian modernism, took and collected hundreds of photographs. Salvador Novo, a major Mexican writer, meditated on the medium’s aesthetic potential as “the prodigal daughter of the fine arts.” Intellectuals acted as tourists and ethnographers, and their images and texts circulated in popular mass media, sharing the page with photographs of the New Woman. In this richly illustrated study, Gabara introduces the concept of a modernist “ethos” to illuminate the intertwining of aesthetic innovation and ethical concerns in the work of leading Brazilian and Mexican literary figures, who were also photographers, art critics, and contributors to illustrated magazines during the 1920s and 1930s. Gabara argues that Brazilian and Mexican modernists deliberately made photography err: they made this privileged medium of modern representation simultaneously wander and work against its apparent perfection. They flouted the conventions of mainstream modernism so that their aesthetics registered an ethical dimension. Their photographic modernism strayed, dragging along the baggage of modernity lived in a postcolonial site. Through their “errant modernism,” avant-garde writers and photographers critiqued the colonial history of Latin America and its twentieth-century formations.
