This prayerbook was put together for use in the Talmidi Israelite community, with the intention of making the seven days of the Festival of Unleavened Bread more meaningful, and the first and last days of the festival more special. It is designed for those who want to have something more substantial by way of prayer during the days of the Festival. After the reading of the Exodus story on Seder night, the seven days are often something of an anti-climax; apart from eating a different diet, and even though they are known as 'secular festival days' (chol ha-mo'ed), they often merely feel like any other day of the year, as if they are not even part of any holiday at all. However, in Temple times, there were special services and offerings made in the Temple to mark each and every day of the Festival. In addition, the first and last days of the Festival were observed as holy days of special convocation. By explaining all the symbolism of each constituent part of the services in the introduction, this siddur tries to recreate some of the atmosphere of attending the Temple during those seven days ordained by God, and of participating in those services. Recalling the daily incense and menorah services therefore become the central hub of each service.

In this ninth book in the "Praying the Scriptures" series, author Dr. Elmer Towns reveals the times, troubles, and triumphs of the Israelites as they were freed from slavery and left Egypt. He also delves deeply into how, when, and why the Levites received God's laws and instructions to "Be holy, because I am holy." Sit at the dinner table with Moses and Job as they talk about God's faithfulness to deliver and provide; and listen to the conversation between Moses and Aaron as Moses writes the last words God gives him about offerings. Dr. Towns' translated the Scriptures from the original text into modern English-thought for thought-and then turned each passage into a prayer to God. A process he calls transliteration-a process you will call intriguing and exciting! As you read Praying Your Way Out of Bondage, be prepared to enter your personal Promised Land.

This book examines the development of institutionalized prayer in ancient Israel at a crucial time in the history of Western civilization: from the period of the Qumran writings, in the last three centuries BCE, through to the rabbinic period, after 70 CE. It explores the shift from sacrificial worship by priests to abstract, unmediated, direct approaches to the deity by laypeople. It demonstrates the transition from voluntary, freely composed prayers to obligatory prayers with fixed texts. The study shows how Qumran and Samaritan prayer contrast with rabbinic prayer, shedding light on Jewish customs before the rabbinic reform. Posthumously edited by Bernard M. Levinson.
