Federal guidelines mandate that schools find meaningful ways to communicate with families. One of the most effective means of communication is the home visit. This project uses classroom action research in home visits using the model developed by the Parent/Teacher Home Visit Project to document the effectiveness of home visits and provide a handbook for special education teachers at Vineland Preschool. The handbook is designed to assuage the fears of educators and provide effective tools for using home visits to improve the quality of classroom instruction. This project concludes that home visits are a particularly effective means of engaging parents in the education of their children and are particularly meaningful when educators treat each individual visit as a unique experience. Home visits should be strongly encouraged at all levels and teachers provided tools to train allow them to make use of the information gained during home visits to transform teaching practice in all areas.

The research presented explores the transition to kindergarten, various types of transition practices commonly used and those deemed most effective by experts in the field. The resources shared describe the benefits of establishing positive teacher-family relationships during the transition and how teachers can support this goal by conducting home visits. The action research portion included the families of half-day kindergarten students who were offered the opportunity to have their child's teacher visit their home before the first day of school. The teacher researcher conducted home visits and gained documented insight from parents about their experiences through surveys. The surveys addressed both the home visit and the overall transition to kindergarten. The results of the surveys indicated that families prefer transition practices that form an individual connection between the teacher and family prior to the start of the school year. The most preferred method among families was the home visit experience.

Research has shown educators’ implicit biases to be a key factor in creating and perpetuating disparities in students’ experiences of schooling, learning, and longer-term outcomes, including job opportunities, wealth, and health. Current school reform and transformation efforts are aimed at addressing institutionalized racism in school policies, practices, and cultural systems by implementing implicit bias training for teachers and staff. In this paper, we explain how a school home visits program, Parent Teacher Home Visits (PTHV), is a promising intervention for counteracting implicit biases and improving outcomes for families and students. The PTHV “relational” home visit model focuses on promoting mutually supportive and accountable relationships between educators and families. We present data from a study examining the experiences of 107 educators and 68 family members who participated in PTHV, showing how educators shifted their deficit assumptions about families and students. Although the PTHV model was not created to address implicit biases, we found that the key components of these home visits align with strategies that psychological research has demonstrated effectively counteracting implicit biases and reducing discriminatory behaviors.

While the importance of the transition to kindergarten has been established, there is a dearth of knowledge about the content and effects of transition home visits. This in-depth study included 6 home visitors (4 kindergarten teachers, 1 principal, and 1 kindergarten teacher-researcher) and 37 parents (visited by the 4 kindergarten teachers and 1 principal). Study approaches were designed to investigate their transition home visit experiences and perspectives. The study purpose was to begin to understand what home visits might look like and what their effects might be for children's transition to kindergarten. Qualitative analyses of visitor focus groups and journals and parent interviews and questionnaires, as well as ancillary quantitative data, revealed a variety of evolving home visit approaches. The results indicated that kindergarten transition home visits were successful at both improving visitor-parent and visitor-child relationships and easing the transition to school. Responses from parents and home visitors were considerably more positive than negative regarding all aspects of the home visit experience. Throughout, home visitors argued convincingly for the value of home visits, but they did not recommend mandating a specific home visit approach.

The purpose of this single case study was to develop an in-depth description of the practice of home visits conducted by kindergarten teachers with students at the beginning of the school year in a suburban, low-income elementary school in North Carolina. The theory guiding this study was Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) ecological systems theory of human development, as it states that important child development occurs in all environments where children interact. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews, mock letters of advice, and a focus group. The purposive sample included kindergarten teachers who conducted home visits, parents of kindergarteners who had a home visit conducted by their child’s kindergarten teacher, and Early Childhood Leaders in the district who have a vested interest in kindergarten teachers conducting home visits. I analyzed the data through coding and discovering themes. I sought to better understand the practice of kindergarten teachers conducting home visits that are used with kindergarteners by answering the following research questions: How do stakeholders describe the practices of kindergarten teachers conducting home visits in a suburban, low-income North Carolina elementary school? How is the building of relationships described when kindergarten teachers conduct home visits with students starting kindergarten? How is the home environment described when kindergarten teachers conduct home visits with students starting kindergarten? Results showed that the practice of kindergarten teachers conducting home visits is an enjoyable experience for all stakeholders, helps build genuine relationships, is a learning experience for the kindergarten teacher, and is impactful in different ways for each stakeholder.
