La dictadura de Primo de Rivera, la guerra incivil, la dictadura franquista i les seves conseqüències (la prohibició de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans, l’ofegament econòmic, la desbandada i exili de bona part dels intel·lectuals catalans), i qui sap quins altres factors, es confabularen per impedir que arribés a bon port una iniciativa popular d’homenatge a Pompeu Fabra, gestada el 1928, en forma de textos diversos que s’havien de reunir en un volum commemoratiu dels seixanta anys del mestre. Com tants projectes i tantes activitats estroncats per l’ensulsiada, les col·laboracions que l’havien de constituir, aplegades al seu moment i servades, almenys en part, a l’Arxiu de l’IEC, no foren publicades mai. Ha calgut la voluntat de Mariàngela Vilallonga, quan era vicepresidenta de l’Institut, i l’esforç de Pere Quer, presentador i compilador d’aquest volum, així com la inestimable participació del personal de l’Arxiu de l’IEC, de Ramon Pinyol, president de la Secció Històrico-Arqueològica, i de la resta de persones que han facilitat la tasca de Quer, per a rescabalar, fins on s’ha pogut, el projecte inicial. Des de la Presidència de l’Institut s’ha entès des del primer moment que publicar aquest homenatge a Pompeu Fabra era molt més que un treball erudit: es tracta d’un exercici de justícia històrica envers el mestre a les acaballes de l’Any Fabra i envers als autors dels textos recuperats, a nou dècades de distància de la seva aportació. Enhorabona al compilador per la tasca realitzada, que ens obre una finestra, fins ara no prou coneguda, a la Catalunya del primer terç del segle i afegeix el testimoni dels col·laboradors del volum als homenatges que, totalment merescuts, ha rebut mestre Fabra per la seva obra filològica i patriòtica. This book proposes an innovative conceptual framework to explore cultural organizations at a multilateral level and cultural mediators as key figures in cultural and institutionalization processes. Specifically, it analyzes the role of Ibero-American mediators in the institutionalization of Hispanic and Lusophone cultures in the first half of the 20th century by means of two institutional networks: PEN (the non-governmental writer’s association) and the International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation (predecessor to UNESCO). Attempting to combine cultural and global history, sociology, and literary studies, the book uses an analytical focus on intercultural networks and cultural transfer to investigate the multiple activities and roles that these mediators and cultural organizations set in motion. Literature has traditionally studied major figures and important centers of cultural production, but other regions and localities also played a crucial role in the development of intellectual cooperation. This book reappraises the place of Ibero-America in international cultural relations and retrieves the lost history of key secondary actors. The book will appeal to scholars from international relations, global and cultural history, sociology, postcolonial Studies, world and comparative literature, and New Hispanisms.
