Muitas das cenas descritas foram vividas pelo autor, Andreas Latzko (1876-1943), húngaro de expressão alemã que atuou como oficial do Exército Real do Império Austro-Húngaro. Lançado na Suíça, onde o autor se recuperava de traumatismos sofridos no front, o livro foi traduzido em várias línguas e prontamente censurado nos países envolvidos no conflito. Latzko foi identificado como autor e destituído de seu posto militar. O livro tornou-se um dos principais libelos dos militantes pacifistas na Europa. Em texto raro sobre Latzko, de quem era entusiasta, o escritor austríaco Stefan Zweig relatou como foi a recepção de Homens em guerra na Europa: "Soltamos um grito de alegria: a verdade, acorrentada, tinha rompido suas correntes, suplantou as cem barricadas da censura, foi ouvida no mundo inteiro! Esperamos pelo livro, o livro proibido que os guardas espreitavam vigilantemente nas fronteiras para que não viesse envenenar a mentira tão bem cuidada pelo grande entusiasmo". A edição conta com um texto de apresentação de Stefan Zweig e um depoimento do escritor francês Romain Rolland, ambos entusiastas da literatura e da tomada de posição de Latzko. A tradução do alemão foi feita por Claudia Abeling.

From war campaigns to peacekeeping operations, The Portuguese at War presents an overview of the conflicts, wars and revolutions in which Portugal was involved from the nineteenth century to the present day. From the French invasions to the civil wars, from the African Empire to the wars of decolonisation, from belligerence in the First World War to neutrality in the Second, from participation in the Atlantic Alliance to peacekeeping operations in Kosovo, East Timor, Lebanon and Afghanistan. The book addresses the military interventions in politics and the role of the countrys political regimes in military reform: from the Liberal Revolutions to the Republic, from the military dictatorship and authoritarian regime to the 25th of April Revolution and the transition to democracy. The historical record of Portugals war involvement is not only closely aligned to international and European circumstance but to internal factors: the economy, society, public opinion and political/military power. A historical perspective must of necessity link Portuguese war excursions with the military institutions in place at the time: their recruitment system, social composition and organisation of the army, navy and air force; the military ethos; the evolution of equipment, weapons and military technologies; strategic military doctrine and how this impacted on tactics and military operations; and of course the war outcomes. Special attention is given to the effects of international isolation after the Estado Novo, and post-Cold War europeanisation. The book does not eschew the plurality of interpretative theories. Rather, it seeks to combine historical accuracy of the Portuguese at war within a highly readable literary narrative aimed not only at undergraduate and research levels, but at a broader public audience interested in the complex reach and role of Portugal in world history.

Cada conto flutua entre a confusão mental dos homens e a paz espiritual dos objetos. Já houve época em que objetos eram apenas escravos dos desejos humanos. E na mente classificatória dos humanos, certo dia, há milhares de anos, um objeto qualquer foi admirado e ungido como sendo algo precioso e, a partir de então, transformou-se em arte. E o homem passou a venerar certos objetos como se fossem deuses. Hoje, existem mais objetos no mundo do que seres humanos, classificados em funções de uso as mais diversas possíveis. Em particular, gosto dos objetos de paz. Por exemplo, a Lua; ou mesmo o símbolo da concha de vieira do Caminho de Santiago, que representa paz, energia, direção. A concha espelha o Caminho de Santiago, pois, metaforicamente, cada sulco, ou ranhura da concha retrata um percurso até chegar a Santiago. O vidro é outro objeto sofisticado, que denota transparência, harmonia e, lógico, paz.Por isso, escolhi a foto da Lua na capa, em contraste com o arame farpado, que separa, machuca, isola animais, natureza e até o próprio homem, em tempos de guerra. Mas entendo que o mesmo objeto, embora possua a mesma imagem acústica, possa assumir outro conteúdo semântico para o leitor, visto que um objeto pode simbolizar paz para um e, ao mesmo tempo, representar código de guerra para outro. Tudo depende da experiência de vida de cada um. A semiologia explica essas situações. Então, leitor, caminhe nessa viagem dos contos para descobrir que existem relações íntimas, racionais, emocionais, sensitivas e intuitivas entre nós, humanos, e os objetos. Será que podemos apenas defini-los como inanimados?
