Warfare and wealth were the major means for acquiring status in precolonial Minahasa (North Sulawesi). The author argues that the quest for power and prestige is an ongoing concern among Minahasans. Based on extensive anthropological and historical research, this book focuses on patterns and processes of social mobility. The character of leadership in tribal society, then under the colonial bureaucracy, and later in modern Indonesia are discussed. Besides political changes, changes in economic conditions and in religion have had a considerable influence on mobility. These processes are illustrated by a case study of a local community.

Galicia, the region in the northwest corner of Spain contiguous with Portugal, is officially known as the Autonomous Community of Galicia. It is recognized as one of the historical nationalities making up the Spanish state, as legitimized by the Spanish Constitution of 1978. Although Galicia and Portugal belong to different states, there are frequent allusions to their similarities. This study compares topographic and ethnographic descriptions of Galicia and Portugal from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to understand how the integration into different states and the existence of nationalist discourses resulted in marked differences in the historical representations of these two bordering regions of the Iberian Peninsula. The author explores the role of the imagination in creating a sense, over the last century and a half, of the national being and becoming of these two related peoples.

The present collection echoes and contributes to a number of the issues defined by both the traditional and revisionist historiography. Este livro se propõe a dar visibilidade à presença feminina no contexto dos deslocamentos portugueses para o Brasil, abordando aspectos diferenciados de suas experiências, ações cotidianas, de trabalho, manifestações culturais, práticas e memórias. Quase sempre silenciadas, as mulheres não podem ser consideradas como passivas nos processos de deslocamentos. Ao contrário, mesmo quando estavam destinadas a permanecer na terra natal, participavam ativamente do processo e das decisões de partida. Assim, tanto as que ficaram como as que saíram tiveram suas histórias de vida transformadas, com a assunção de funções e responsabilidades ampliadas. Ciente de que as fontes priorizadas pela historiografia envolvem discursos universais que silenciam as mulheres, a obra abarcou o desafio de uma ampla pesquisa documental, através da qual resgatou as múltiplas experiências das mulheres e/imigrantes portuguesas e sua presença no Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo. Torna-se, assim, uma contribuição singular para dissipar a névoa que encobre trajetórias de mulheres, revelando toda a sua capacidade de reinvenção e permitindo afirmar que a presença feminina foi fundamental para o sucesso da empreitada de e/imigração.
