Chrétiens peu instruits de l'Ecriture et des travaux des théologiens, nous avions tous les deux conscience de ce que, si nous ne vivions pas une expérience personnelle de libération et de participation à l'expérience de libération de nos frères, croyants et incroyants, nous n'étions que des plaisantins de la foi. De l'éprouvante expérience de la libération des camps de la mort, d'amis particulièrement aimés, au partage de l'espérance des ouvriers et des pauvres et au combat pour la paix et l'avènement d'une culture de l'universel, nous avons cheminé de commencement en commencement, à travers élans et échecs, vers une issue qui nous paraissait possible et souhaitable, en acceptant de nous salir les mains. C'est à la sortie d'une messe de Pentecôte, à Montmélian (Savoie), en 1941, que Renée et moi, nous sommes rencontrés. Oserai-je dire, me référant à l'affirmation de Jésus à ses disciples : " Vous êtes avec moi depuis le commencement " que, pour nous, le commencement, ce fut ce matin de Pentecôte, il y a soixante et un ans, et qu'au cours des derniers mois de la vie de Renée, nous n'avons cessé d'espérer, dans l'attente de cette Vie qui jaillit du Ressuscité comme l'eau d'une source.
