Excerpt from Homogeneous Linear Substitutions In this book I have attempted to put together for the benefit of the mathematical student those properties of the Homogeneous Linear Substitution with real or complex coefficients of which frequent use is made in the Theory of Groups and in the Theory of Bilinear Forms and Invariant-factors; but which have not hitherto been collected in a single treatise, so far as I am aware. I have confined myself to those properties of substitutions which do not depend on any group of such substitutions. The main reason for this limitation is the fact that the most interesting properties of substitution-groups may be found in the second edition of Prof. Burnside's Theory of Groups (Cambridge Univ. Press, 1911); and it does not seem worth while to repeat work already so excellently performed. I have also limited myself in the main to the discussion of substitutions whose determinant does not vanish. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Excerpt from The Theory of Substitution and Its Applications to Algebra The presentation of the Theory of Substitutions here given differs in several essential features from that which has heretofore been custom ary. It will accordingly be proper in this place to state in brief the guiding principles adopted in the present work. It is unquestionable that the sphere of application of an Algorithm is extended by eliminating from its fundamental principles and its general structure all matters and suppositions not absolutely essential to its nature, and that through the general character of the objects with which it deals, the possibility of its employment in the most varied directions is secured. That the theory of the construction of groups admits of such a treatment is a guarantee for its far-reaching impor tance and for its future. Excerpt from The Necessary and Sufficient Conditions Under Which Two Linear Homogeneous Differential Equations Have Integrals in Common Further we know that the solutions of linear homogeneous differential equations with constant coefficients are in general of the form e, where X must satisfy the equation obtained above. From this consideration, we see clearly why we should obtain. The solution of the algebraic problem as a spedal case from that of the differential equation. Excerpt from On Systems of Linear Ordinary Differential Equations The nearest approach to such a treatment is contained in the wkb method which yields an approximate solution of a linear second order equation as a sum of exponentials with variable coefficients and exponents. In some presentations of the method higher order approximations are also obtained, but it is generally not clear whether the successive approximations converge to a solution of the equation or not. For a large class of cond order equations involving a parameter in a particular way, Birkhoff and L ave settled this matter by showing that the web approximation is the leading term in an asymptotic expansion of the solution with respect to the parameter. Excerpt from A Treatise on Linear Differential Equations, Vol. 1 This literature, however, is so scattered among the different mathematical journals and publications of learned societies that it is 'extremely difficult for students to read up the subject properly. I have endeavored in the present treatise to give a by no means complete but, I trust, a sufficient account of the theory as it stands Ito-day, to meet the needs of students. Excerpt from An Asymptotic Solution of Linear Second-Order Hyperbolic Differential Equations Cambridge Research Laboratories or Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, as opposed to the system of first-order Maxwell equations. While the general principles underlying this development are the same as those previously employed. The details of proof are quite different and the resulting ordinary differential equations for the coefficients of the expansion are also quite different in form. It is hoped that the present material will be easier to apply because the ordinary differential equations to be solved are simpler. For example, each ordinary differ ential equation here is the analogue of two sets of three ordinary differential equa tions in the electromagnetic case. Excerpt from Group-Characters of Various Linear Groups: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Ogden Graduate School of Science, in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy; Department of Mathematics In Part I we consider the group HE sle (2, p 2, of all binary linear homogeneous substitutions in the GF [pn], of determinant unity. By the aid of two theorems due to Frobenius on the relation between the characters of a group and those Of one of its quotient-groups, we deduce as a corollary the char actera of the group FE lf(2, p 2, of all binary linear fractional subeti tutions in the GF [p] of determinant unity (when in their normal forms). We have also obtained these characters directly by the method applied to the group H the chief points of difference in the treatment are stated in foot-notes. The results are a direct generalization of those Obtained by Frobenius. In Part II we consider the group 1715 sle (2, p: 2. This is identical with the group LF (2, p 2. Part III deals with the group F, of all binary linear fractional substitutions in the p>2, of determinant not zero. The group H is treated with considerable detail; the others briefly.
