Hong Kong Dark Cinema written by Kim-Mui E. Elaine Chan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-27 with Performing Arts categories.

This book is a scholarly investigation of the historical development and contemporary transformation of film noir in today’s Hong Kong. Focusing on the evolvement of cinematic narratives, aesthetics, and techniques, the author balances a deep reading of the multiple filmic plots with a discussion of the cinematic portrayals of gender, romance, identities and power relations. Nuancing the prototypical cinematic form and tragic sense of classical film noir, the recent Hong Kong cinema turns around the classical generic role of film noir at the turn of the century to convey very different messages—joy, hope or love. This book examines how the mainstream cinema, or pre-and-post-Hong Kong cinema in particular, applies a peculiar strategy that makes rooms for the audience to enjoy a pleasure-giving process of reflexivity and also critique the mainstream ideology. With new analytical approaches and angles, this book breaks new ground in offering transcultural and cross-genre analyses on the cinema and its impact in local and international markets. This book is the first major scholarly investigation of the historical development and contemporary transformation of film noir in today’s Hong Kong. Focusing on the evolvement of cinematic narratives, aesthetics, and techniques, the author balances a deep reading of the multiple filmic plots with a refreshing discussion of the cinematic portrayals of gender, romance, identities and power relations. This book also revisits conceptual categories developed by Foucault, Lacan, Derrida and Butler.

Since the 1960s, Hong Kong cinema has helped to shape one of the world's most popular cultural genres: action cinema. Hong Kong action films have proved popular over the decades with audiences worldwide, and they have seized the imaginations of filmmakers working in many different cultural traditions and styles. How do we account for this appeal, which changes as it crosses national borders? Hong Kong Connections brings leading film scholars together to explore the uptake of Hong Kong cinema in Japan, Korea, India, Australia, France and the US as well as its links with Taiwan, Singapore and the Chinese mainland. In the process, this collective study examines diverse cultural contexts for action cinema's popularity, and the problems involved in the transnational study of globally popular forms suggesting that in order to grasp the history of Hong Kong action cinema's influence we need to bring out the differences as well as the links that constitute popularity.

Craziness And Carnival In Neo Noir Chinese Cinema written by Harry H. Kuoshu and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-20 with Literary Criticism categories.

Craziness and Carnival in Neo-Noir Chinese Cinema offers an in-depth discussion of the “stone phenomenon” in Chinese film production and cinematic discourses triggered by the extraordinary success of the 2006 low-budget film, Crazy Stone. Surveying the nuanced implications of the film noir genre, Harry Kuoshu argues that global neo noir maintains a mediascape of references, borrowings, and re-workings and explores various social and cultural issues that constitute this Chinese episode of neo noir. Combining literary explorations of carnival, postmodernism, and post-socialism, Kuoshu advocates for neo noir as a cultural phenomenon that connects filmmakers, film critics, and film audiences rather than an industrial genre.

Hong Kong Babylon written by Fredric Dannen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Motion picture actors and actresses categories.

Over the past few years, Hong Kong movies have become more popular and studied by critics and film-goers alike. It is a cinema of incessant action, eye-popping effects and cartoon-like violence which has left its mark on the work of many young contemporary Western Film-makers. Conversely, Hong Kong film-makers like John Woo have crossed over and put their unique stamp on American films like Hard Target and Broken Arrow with John Travolta. In his book Fredric Dannen depicts the dark inner world of Hong Kong cinema: the brave and enigmatic actors who risk their lives performing dangerous stunts and explosive feats of martial arts; the movie producers, many of whom are involved with the criminal triad families and who will resort, literally, to murder to secure a deal or an actor for a film. Hong Kong Babylon is an indispensable guide to one of the most exciting national cinemas.

City On Fire written by Michael Hoover and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-09-17 with Performing Arts categories.

Hong Kong’s film industry gained global attention in the 1980s, at the time of negotiations over Great Britain’s return of the colony to China. Uncertainty about the post-handover era accelerated Hong Kong’s race for economic growth, and found expression in cinema’s depictions of a ‘city on fire.’ In this accessible introduction to the extraordinary cinematic output of the colony, Michael Hoover and Lisa Stokes review the directors and films that have established Hong Kong cinema internationally: John Woo’s martial arts flicks, Tsui Hark’s wire-worked fantasies, Ann Hui’s exile melodramas, Stanley Kwan’s limpid romances, and Wong Kar-wai’s stylish art films.

Cinemas Dark And Slow In Digital India written by Lalitha Gopalan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-16 with Performing Arts categories.

This book provides a sustained engagement with contemporary Indian feature films from outside the mainstream, including Aaranaya Kaandam, I.D., Kaul, Chauthi Koot, Cosmic Sex, and Gaali Beeja, to undercut the dominance of Bollywood focused film studies. Gopalan assembles films from Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Trivandrum, in addition to independent productions in Bombay cinema, as a way of privileging understudied works that deserve critical attention. The book uses close readings of films and a deep investigation of film style to draw attention to the advent of digital technologies while remaining fully cognizant of ‘the digital’ as a cryptic formulation for considering the sea change in the global circulation of film and finance. This dual focus on both the techno-material conditions of Indian cinema and the film narrative offers a fulsome picture of changing narratives and shifting genres and styles.

Andrew Lau And Alan Mak S Infernal Affairs The Trilogy written by Gina Marchetti and has been published by Hong Kong University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-01 with Social Science categories.

Infernal Affairs has received journalistic, popular and corporate notice but little vigorous critical attention. In this book, Gina Marchetti explores the way this example of Hong Kong's cinematic eclecticism has crossed borders as a story, a commercial product and a work of art; and has had an undeniable impact on current Hong Kong cinema. Moreover, she uses this trilogy to highlight the way Hong Kong cinema continues to be inextricably intertwined with global film culture and the transnational movie market. Infernal Affairs served as the source for the Academy Award-winning film The Departed (2006). The Martin Scorsese-directed film won Oscars for best motion picture, director, adapted screenplay and film editing. This is the first time that an American film based on a Hong Kong production swept the Academy Awards by winning four top prizes.
