The beauty of Christmas is more than tinsel and cookies and trimming the tree. The beauty of Christmas is exploring the story of Christmas in Luke 1 and 2. Advent. A time of remembrance and of expectation. A season to recall Jesus's birth over two thousand years ago. And a season of anticipation at His future return as King. Jesus's birth restored hope in people who hadn't heard from God in over four hundred years. His people needed to know He was still with them even when life looked grim. The same is true for us. When we look back at the tumult and triumphs we may have endured this year, it is powerful to remind ourselves that because of Jesus-as Isaiah prophesied, our "Immanuel"-our God is with us. This means that - in the day-to-day, God is with us; - in the changing seasons, God is with us; - in sadness and in celebrations, God is with us; - in breakups and in restorations, God is with us. It is necessary that we remind our children, our friends, and our nation that because of Jesus Christ, no matter the dark past or the present experiences, our futures can be bright! Hope Has Come: An Advent Devotional is a family-style devotional to be read each day in December leading up to Christmas. Experience and explore the most incredible story ever told. The advent story. Jesus came, and He is coming again. This is our living hope, and His name is Jesus.

Advent. What is it anyway? Through the centuries Christians have celebrated this season in a few different ways. By the 6th century, many church traditions tied it to the concept of waiting, with hopeful anticipation, for the coming of Christ. The word advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means "coming" or "visit." This eventually linked it to Jesus' first coming, which we celebrate as Christmas. The season of Advent is the time of year we reflect on the coming of Jesus. We can also look to His promised future coming as Philippians 3:20 NLT tells us, "But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for Him to return as our Savior." Christmas can be a season marked with great hope and true joy, no matter what is going on in our lives, as we contemplate all God has done for us through the fulfilled promise of the coming of the Lord. Advent is also an opportunity for us to welcome the Lord more fully into our hearts and minds, as we marvel at the wonder of Immanuel, God with us. Christmas can be an exhausting time as many extra activities and expenditures threaten to add to already stressful lives, diminishing some of the joy of the season. It can also be a season that brings up painful memories. I think many of us long to do it differently. I can't think the Lord wants us to celebrate this most pivotal time in history by overspending, and overdoing. We can be intentional and escape the fevered pitch of the holidays by slowing down to consider the blessing that Jesus' life among us truly is. We can find our way to joy, even in difficult times, reflecting on what it is to know Jesus. Advent can be a wonderful time of pondering what and Who our hearts truly long for. We can spend less time engaging in mind numbing activities during the Christmas season, and seek the Lord Himself in ways that are soul nourishing and life giving. This devotional was written to help us celebrate the season by looking at scripture that tells the story of Jesus' coming so we are encouraged as we remember anew the incredible gift His life truly is.

“Do not be afraid” was the message brought by angels to four people, while telling them life-altering news. Anxiety would be any humans response to protecting themselves from hopes being dashed again, a dramatic change of plans, dreams being crushed or feeling exposed—no longer able to hide the truth. The lives of Zacharias, Mary, Joseph and the Shepherds from 2000 years ago will show you that even though the packages of life may appear barren, God is indeed a gracious giver, that He comes to save lives, not destroy them—for he is a Savior and a dream re-maker. You are one of His favorites, and He can come into the darkest of lives, flooding them with brilliant beauty and grace. The messages are rock solid even for you today, ready to hold you steady, going forward with hope, joy, love and peace when you, too, fear what next might happen. Daily worship songs and activities will lead you to live loved as you are beloved, and the study questions are perfect for individual use, groups, or family devotions. You will find a page to journal on each day as well as full color photos to accompany the activities, a few recipes, and gift ideas that will help you make joyful traditions in your own family for generations to come.
