Uno de los temas que siempre han pugnado por ocupar un lugar destacado en el espectro de las verdades cristianas es el del demonio: un tema que a lo largo de los siglos ha corrido suertes bien diversas: junto a períodos de auge (siglo XV y XVI, por ejemplo), también ha conocido momentos de declive y de olvido. Estas páginas intentan narrar algunas de las peripecias padecidas por tan vilipendiado personaje. El lector no se halla ante un tratado de demonología, sino ante un ensayo que, en la medida de lo posible, intenta ser riguroso. Las estaciones que se recorren son variadas: se empieza constatando que Satán ha envejecido y ha perdido poder: se evoca la cara amable del personaje, sin ensañamiento, que fue martillo de herejes y brujas: se constata que los teólogos lo tienen algo abandonado: se recuerda que sus orígenes fueron poco brillantes (en el A.T. fue una figura marginal): se reconoce que las cosas cambian en el N.T, donde el demonio brilla casi con luz propia, por último, se le agradecen los servicios prestados: su conocida rudeza ayudó a los seguidores e intérpretes de Jesús a destacar con mayor plasticidad la hondura y novedad del mensaje de éste. El ensayo concluye recordando que el discurso sobre el demonio no es inofensivo: un Satán elevado a puestos que no le corresponden en el universo cristiano puede volver a desempeñar la función que ejerció en el A.T.:la de ser un "estorbo".MANUEL FRAIJÓ, doctor en Teología y en Filosofía, es profesor de Filosofía de la Religión y de Historia de las Religiones en la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia. Entre sus publicaciones figuran: Jesús y los marginados (1985): El sentido de la historia (1986): Realidad de Dios y drama del hombre (1985): Fragmentos de esperanza (1992). Desde 1975 es colaborador académico habitual del Instituto "Fe y Secularidad".
