The internationalisation of the logistics and transport industry has massively increased in the last three decades. Given this rapid growth, fully understanding the determinants and implications of this phenomenon has been high on the agenda for both policy makers as well as academics. The inward FDI (greenfield and M&A), on which the present paper focuses, can be driven by three different strategies: horizontal, vertical and conglomerate integrations. In case of horizontal integration, the investment is carried out in the same industry of the parent multinational enterprise (MNE) (i.e., a MNE operating in the maritime transport undertakes an investment in maritime transport). When vertical integration takes place, the MNE invests in different stages of the same industry (i.e., an investment of a maritime MNE in a terminal operator.) Finally, a conglomerate integration occurs when the investment in a logistics activity is carried out by a non-logistics MNE (i.e., a manufacturing MNE). The three strategies are moved by different drivers, going from "increasing market power" to "reducing transaction costs". As concerns Italy, that is the country of interest of the present paper, in the last decade the logistics and transport industry has been increasingly interested by inward FDI, which are concentrated in the supply of integrated and intermodal services or other higher value added services than the pure goods and passengers transport. The integration strategies are a relatively unexplored area in logistics research. The present paper extends the existing literature on the integration strategies undertaken by foreign MNE investing in the Italian market, by exploring the drivers behind them. Descriptive statistics and econometric analyses are carried out. The data used come from the LogINT database, developed by the Laboratory of Economics, Logistics and Territory of DiAP-Politecnico di Milano, and covers the period 2000 - 2009. Additional qualitative data about the motivations behind the integrations strategies, undertaken by the foreign logistics MNE, have been collected in the logistics magazines and the companies' web sites.

Transport And Logistics In A Globalizing World written by Ilaria Mariotti and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-26 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Globalization of the economy, fragmentation of the production process, increasing externalization of TNCs activities through their global value chains and the widespread adoption of Just-in-Time have increased the flows of raw materials, intermediate goods and finished products, with a direct effect on the transport and logistics industry. This industry, indeed, plays a key role in connecting the different import and export markets and the vertically disaggregated components of production system, which are widespread in the world. The existing literature on transport and logistics is mainly focused on engineering research, transportation economics and management studies, disregarding the view of regional economics, which relates with the impact of economics on space, and therefore, on the impact of internationalisation on a specific industry – transport and logistics and its effects on space. The present book aims to fill the gap in the existing literature by presenting the state of the art of the impact of globalisation and internationalisation of the economy on this industry and focusing on the case of Italy.

New Perspectives On Industrial Organization written by Victor J. Tremblay and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-20 with Business & Economics categories.

This book covers the main topics that students need to learn in a course on Industrial Organization. It reviews the classic models and important empirical evidence related to the field. However, it will differ from prior textbooks in two ways. First, this book incorporates contributions from behavioral economics and neuroeconomics, providing the reader with a richer understanding of consumer preferences and the motivation for many of the business practices we see today. The book discusses how firms exploit consumers who are prone to making mistakes and who suffer from cognitive dissonance, attention lapses, and bounded rationality, for example and will help explain why firms invest in persuasive advertising, offer 30-day free trials, offer money-back guarantees, and engage in other observed phenomena that cannot be explained by the traditional approaches to industrial organization. A second difference is that this book achieves a balance between textbooks that emphasize formal modeling and those that emphasize the history of the field, empirical evidence, case studies, and policy analysis. This text puts more emphasis on the micro-foundations (i.e., consumer and producer theory), classic game theoretic models, and recent contributions from behavioral economics that are pertinent to industrial organization. Each topic will begin with a discussion of relevant theory and models and will also include a discussion of concrete examples, empirical evidence, and evidence from case studies. This will provide students with a deeper understanding of firm and consumer behavior, of the factors that influence market structure and economic performance, and of policy issues involving imperfectly competitive markets. The book is intended to be a textbook for graduate students, MBAs and upper-level undergraduates and will use examples, graphical analysis, algebra, and simple calculus to explain important ideas and theories in industrial organization.

The Logistic Revolution written by Richard Vahrenkamp and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Business logistics categories.

In The Logistic Revolution, Richard Vahrenkamp discusses the political and economic factors which have led to the rise of logistics in Europe in the context of the mass consumption society. Not only does he show the ascent of truck transport in the 1920s to satisfy consumer needs and the importance of the European motorway infrastructure for the development of modern logistics, he also sheds light on the dimension that freight transport has acquired in Europe and on the organizations that have been created in Europe to enable and facilitate cross border goods transports. Other than in the US, the national transport markets in Europe were initially uncoordinated. It was only in the process of European unification that transport markets for truck freight and associated logistics systems became Europe wide. This change was accompanied by the struggle between rail and truck.

Multinational Firms In The World Economy written by Giorgio Barba Navaretti and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-16 with Business & Economics categories.

Depending on one's point of view, multinational enterprises are either the heroes or the villains of the globalized economy. Governments compete fiercely for foreign direct investment by such companies, but complain when firms go global and move their activities elsewhere. Multinationals are seen by some as threats to national identities and wealth and are accused of riding roughshod over national laws and of exploiting cheap labor. However, the debate on these companies and foreign direct investment is rarely grounded on sound economic arguments. This book brings clarity to the debate. With the contribution of other leading experts, Giorgio Barba Navaretti and Anthony Venables assess the determinants of multinationals' actions, investigating why their activity has expanded so rapidly, and why some countries have seen more such activity than others. They analyze their effects on countries that are recipients of inward investments, and on those countries that see multinational firms moving jobs abroad. The arguments are made using modern advances in economic analysis, a case study, and by drawing on the extensive empirical literature that assesses the determinants and consequences of activity by multinationals. The treatment is rigorous, yet accessible to all readers with a background in economics, whether students or professionals. Drawing out policy implications, the authors conclude that multinational enterprises are generally a force for the promotion of prosperity in the world economy.
