Acest volum de povestiri fantastice, scrise între 1875 și 1890, care se succed aici în ordine cronologică, ne face să înțelegem mai bine că fantasticul este o constantă a operei marelui prozator francez Guy de Maupassant (1850–1893). În cele mai multe dintre aceste proze, noaptea și singurătatea creează condițiile apariției fantasticului. Este de ajuns atunci un eveniment neașteptat, o eroare de percepție, o alterare a simțurilor auditivă și vizuală pentru ca rațiunea să se clatine și totul să fie învăluit de insolit și angoasă. Maupassant nu are nevoie de decoruri supranaturale, căci fantasticul rămâne întotdeauna în realitate, fiind cu atât mai neliniștitor. Geniul lui face cititorul captiv, acționează asupra conștiinței sale și îl face să creadă, cu naturalețe și simplitate, că acel fantastic interior, coerent și logic este viață obișnuită, dar devenită deodată stranie. Această culegere formată din 34 de povestiri fantastice, unică prin integralitatea ei, se joacă cu spaimele noastre cele mai intime, nemărturisite, legate uneori de supranatural, vădind capacitatea autorului de a interioriza efectele fantastice astfel încât ne identificăm total cu naratorul spre marea noastră înfricoșare!
