Increasingly marginalized since the end of the Cold War, the continent of Africa is struggling to identify both the root causes and possible solutions to the maladies that continue to plague it. The problems read like a laundry list of misrule in the aftermath of decolonization: rampant political corruption, internecine wars, widespread disease, underdevelopment, and economic collapse. In the early 1990s, a group of statesmen, academics, and civil leaders from all over Africa gathered to put together a comprehensive plan to make the continent become less dependent on the rest of the world and prepare it to compete in the new globalizing economy. Those who gathered to write what would come to be known as the Kampala Document envisioned an organization which would succeed where the Organization for African Unity (OAU) had failed. This new organization, the Conference on Security, Stability, Development and Cooperation in Africa (CSSDCA), will provide a forum for discussion of democratization, security issues, and sustainable development. This new book by noted scholars Francis Deng and I. William Zartman provides a "mid-course" appraisal of the progress of the CSSDCA, as well as charting its future in relation to other regional organizations. With a preface by President Olusegun Obasanjo, this book will undoubtedly become an important tool in understanding Africa's present and future. Francis Deng is a nonresident senior fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies program at the Brookings Institution. His books include Masses in Flight: The Global Crisis of Internal Displacement (Brookings, 1998, with Roberta Cohen), The Forsaken People: Case Studies of the Internally Displaced (Brookings, 1998, co-edited with Roberta Cohen). I. William Zartman is Jacob Blaustein Professor of International Organizations and Conflict Resolution and Director of African Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.

Nationalism And Ethnicity In The Horn Of Africa written by Dominique Jacquin-Berdal and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Political Science categories.

Dr. Jacquin-Berdal has given us a cogent and lucid defence of a modernist international relations perspective on nationalism. In contrast to current preoccupations with ethnicity, she demonstrates, through a rich and detailed empirical analysis of Eritrea and Somaliland separatism that the colonial territorial state provided the causal basis and motor for the rise of these and other African nationalisms. This book is an important and timely contribution to the theoretical literature on nationalism and to our understanding of contemporary politics in the Horn of Africa. It is important for two reasons. First, since the end of the cold war, the proposition that nations - and hence successful nation-states - invariably spring from an ethnic core has too often gone unchallenged. Those who hold this position tend to regard it almost as a self-evident truth. As Dominique Jacquin-Berdal's analysis impressively demonstrates, it is not. Secondly, most students of nationalism, whether they insist on the ethnic ancestry of the modern nation, or view it as an essentially modern construct, implicitly agree that the roots of the nation and nationalism lie within society rather than outside it. When Vietnam veteran and foreign correspondent Charlie Gage is recruited by the shadowy Thomas Colfax to assist with something called Operation Atropos, he has no idea he is about to be enlisted for guerilla warfare in northeast Africa. Once he realizes he’s a mercenary, however, he is not at all concerned. Ever since his young secretary was killed by a grenade at their bureau office in Beirut a couple of years before, he has lost all volition. Which is why he so readily capitulates not only to Colfax, but also, and more dangerously so, to every command of Jeremy Nordstrand, the mystical megalomaniac determined to achieve greatness on their seemingly suicidal mission. Set in the forsaken yet exotic deserts of Ethiopia, Horn of Africa is a vividly detailed and masterfully plotted novel chronicling a broken man’s struggle for salvation and inner freedom in the midst of a broken nation’s fight for stability and peace.

This book offers an insightful and comprehensive exploration of the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) and its endeavours to foster economic and security regionalism in the dynamic landscape of the Horn of Africa. Established in 1986 as a drought-focused inter-governmental organization, IGAD has transformed into a sub-regional institution with an ambitious vision of promoting regional integration. However, amidst optimism, it grapples with historical, strategic, and geographical complexities that impede progress towards a more unified Horn of Africa. Adopting a political economy approach, the book critically dissects IGAD's role in shaping the zone's security and development. Employing multidisciplinary case studies, it unveils the reality of IGAD's efforts, providing a comprehensive understanding of its strengths and limitations. The book further applies neorealist and regional security complex theories, delving into the roles of states and non-actors, meticulously assessing IGAD's security agenda with Somalia as a focal point. This thought-provoking analysis brings to light the challenges and opportunities for sustainable regional integration. Beyond its academic significance, this book serves as a practical resource, offering sustainable policy templates to bolster regionalism and quell armed insurrections and inter-state conflicts within the Horn. Furthermore, it interrogates the geopolitics of the region, scrutinizing the involvement of foreign powers like the US and China, alongside regional giants like Ethiopia, in IGAD's security and economic aspirations. For researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders devoted to the Horn of Africa's development and reconstruction, this book proves to be an invaluable asset. It fills a significant void in existing literature, providing vital insights into African political development, peace, security, and security sector reforms.
