Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... THROUGH THE SOUTHERN HOSPITALS. It was shortly after this that I was invited by the Red Cross Society to make a tour of three weeks with Miss Sato, and to visit the hospitals in Southern Japan. She was going round to supervise the nurses' work, and although I felt rather sorry to be leaving my work in Tokyo even for a short time, the expedition promised to be most interesting, and one that would afford me an opportunity of seeing some of the most beautiful spots in Japan. We left Tokyo on November 27, and a great many officials from the Red Cross Society, as well as doctors and nurses, came to see us off and to wish us bon voyage. I engaged an elderly Japanese maid, and she proved a good traveller, though somewhat unnecessarily punctual. Often she would be sitting on her packed boxes an hour or two before the time of starting. Travelling in Japan is most comfortable, and the trains, with sleeping-and dining-cars attached, are quite equal to any in Europe. Our visits included Hiroshima, Kokura, Ozaka, Nagoya, the naval hospitals at Kure and Sasebo, and the Russian prisons at Matsuyama. After passing Kobe, the country is almost semi-tropical, and there are enormous tracts of paddy-fields divided by small banks. Every available corner and even the slopes of the mountains are cultivated. The oxen used for ploughing and other purposes are a small breed, THE RICE HARVEST. 107 but appear to be very strong, and in the towns they carry large loads on their backs. Women take their full share of work during the rice harvest, which is in full swing during November, and are dressed in short skirts and dark-blue tights. The rice is made into tiny cocks, often set in rows of fifteen or twenty, or tied on to small trees, which look very quaint, ..

Healthcare in most developed countries face a complex and partly contradictory mix of financial, social and political challenges. Fiscal strains combined with New Public Management agendas have caused severe cutbacks and calls for greater efficiency in public healthcare, resulting in a growing concern about service quality. Co-production and Japanese Healthcare explores a possibility to address these issues from a new perspective that emphasizes greater collaboration between the staff and patients. Here professionals and patients/clients act as ‘partners to co-produce healthcare through their mutual contributions’. Japan has a unique system of two user-owned healthcare providers with nearly 200 hospitals, 500 clinics and 50,000 beds. However, they differ from each other and from public hospitals, in terms of their work environment, service quality, governance models and social values. This volume compares cooperative and public healthcare providers at ten hospitals across Japan with survey data from the staff, as well as from the patients and volunteers at four hospitals. It will be of interest to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of healthcare management, public and non-profit management, human resource management.

This is one of the first attempts to explore the effects of social, political, and cultural variables on the interpretation of ideas about health, illness, and medical care in a technologically rich society. In this collection of essays, five anthropologists and one political scientist demonstrate that modern medical care in Japan is not a uniform, value-free scientific endeavor, but rather a culturally shaped part of a complex pluralistic medical system that is, itself, the product of a specific historical and social tradition. The comparative study of health, illness, and medical care provides a rich source of cross-fertilization of ideas among the social sciences. This collection of essays offers new insights on and raises new questions about contemporary Japanese society, biomedicine as a cultural product, and the transformation that occurs when medical knowledge and techniques are used in a different cultural milieu.
