As a site whose interpretation is situated at the conjunction of palace architecture and festival architecture, Malqata offers unique potential to inform regarding both categories and their interaction. Identified in 1888 as the primary residential palace of Amenhotep III, occupied throughout his reign, the site of Malqata stands with only thirty-seven other structures, portions of structures, or complexes of structures identified as ancient Egyptian palaces. By 1917, with the excavation of hundreds of hieratic jar labels referencing the three Sed Festivals, or royal jubilees, celebrated in the last decade of the reign of Amenhotep III, Malqata joined an even more rare genre of architecture--that identified as facilities for the celebration of the Sed Festival--of which there are only two other examples. As a location identified as hosting Sed Festivals, the site of Malqata came to be classed also as a fundamentally ceremonial palace, an interpretation that stood alongside its categorization as a residential palace. However, modern analyses of ancient Egyptian palaces traditionally categorize them according to function, on the understanding that each palace served but a single function; as a result, interpreting Malqata as both residential and ceremonial creates an unsolved paradox of classification. In addition, despite nearly a century of being identified as a Sed Festival palace, the mechanics of how the spaces preserved and excavated at Malqata might have served to house the enactment of the known rites of that festival remain unexplored, and the ways in which the site might have accommodated a residential function remain underconsidered. In order to address these concerns, the following study critically examines the identification of Malqata as a palace, offering a revised understanding of ancient Egyptian palaces as serving multiple functions simultaneously and contextualizing the site both architecturally within the full developmental history of ancient Egyptian palaces and temporally within the panoply of constructions erected during the reign of Amenhotep III, before engaging in a consideration of Malqata as a proposed Sed Festival location. The spatial expectations of Sed Festival locations are explored based on what is known of the rites included in the celebration, and the developmental history of the site is deconstructed into three phases according to a corrected understanding of the occupational chronology--phases which can be pegged to the celebration of each of the three Sed Festivals. Finally, this detailed view of the site is re-contextualized within its temporal and architectural contexts as a palace constructed during the reign of Amenhotep III.
