In many Sub-Saharan African countries, a large number of people migrate internally or abroad because of demographic, economic and political factors. This pronounced mobility is likely to have consequences for child education, which is still a matter of concern in the region. We study this issue for Uganda, investigating whether the migration of household members affects child primary education and in what direction. Using the Uganda National Panel Survey for 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011, we estimate conditional fixed effects logit models of school attendance and primary school completion. We find that migration of children has a significant positive impact on child school attendance rates while that of adults has a significantly negative effect, and that remittances have no influence. These findings suggest that migration of children is indeed beneficial, since it may contribute to matching the demand and supply of schooling. The absence of adults, instead, has controversial effects when children are left behind. In fact, lack of supervision and children working substituting adults in their tasks might reduce the rate of school attendance. However, the migration of neither children nor adults seem to increase the rate of primary school completion, evidence that points to the problem of the low quality of primary education in developing countries.

The authors examine the impact of migration on educational attainment in rural Mexico. Using historical migration rates by state to instrument for current migration, they find evidence of a significant negative effect of migration on schooling attendance and attainment of 12 to 18 year-old boys and 16 to 18 year-old girls. IV-Censored Ordered Probit results show that living in a migrant household lowers the chances of boys completing junior high school and of boys and girls completing high school. The negative effect of migration on schooling is somewhat mitigated for younger girls with low educated mothers, which is consistent with remittances relaxing credit constraints on education investment for the very poor. However, for the majority of rural Mexican children, family migration depresses educational attainment. Comparison of the marginal effects of migration on school attendance and on participation in other activities shows that the observed decrease in schooling of 16 to 18 year-olds is accounted for by the current migration of boys and increased housework for girls.

Estimation of the causal effect of parental migration on child education is complicated by the likelihood that factors influencing parental migration also affect child educational attainment. This paper exploits variation in siblings' ages at the time of parental migration to get around this endogeneity problem, arguing that parental migration after a child is 20 should have no direct effect on a child's educational attainment. The results point to a positive effect of paternal migration on education, but the results are gender-specific, suggesting that pushing a father's U.S. migration earlier in his daughter's life can lead to an increase in her educational attainment of up to 1 year relative to delaying migration until after she has turned 20. In contrast, paternal domestic migration has no significant effect on educational investments, suggesting that father absence does not play a major role in determining children's educational outcomes. Instead, these results suggest that the marginal dollars from remittances relax the household budget constraint and enable families to invest in girls' education. They are also consistent with the findings from the literature on intrahousehold allocations where an increase in female bargaining power, coinciding with a simultaneous increase in household resources, results in better outcomes for girls and not boys.

"Inequalities in access to education pose a significant barrier to development. It has been argued that this reflects, in part, borrowing constraints that inhibit private investment in human capital by the poor. One promise of the recent proposals to open international labor markets to allow for the temporary economic migration of low-skilled workers from developing to industrial countries is its potential impact on human capital accumulation by the poor. The large remittance flows from migrants to their communities of origin underscores this aspect of migration. However, migration can also transform expectations of future employment and induce changes in household structure that can exert an independent effect on the private returns to investment in human capital. The author explores the relationship between temporary economic migration and investment in child schooling. A key challenge is to deal appropriately with selection into migration. She finds that the potential positive effects of temporary economic migration on human capital accumulation are large. Moreover, the gains are much greater for girls, yielding a very substantial reduction in gender inequalities in access to education. Significantly, though, the gains appear to arise almost entirely from the greater resource flows to migrant households. The author cannot detect any effect of future migration prospects on schooling decisions. More significantly, she does not find any protective effect of migration-induced female headship on schooling outcomes for girls. Rather, female headship appears to protect boys at the cost of girls. This research evaluates the effect of belonging to a migrant household on the likelihood of attending kindergarten and senior secondary school, as well as the impact of migration on household education expenditures in Indonesia. Both linear probability models and ordinary least squares models are used to evaluate these relationships. The results indicate that belonging to a migrant household has a statistically significant impact on the probability that a four to six year-old child will attend kindergarten, and a weakly significant impact on the probability that a teenager will attend senior secondary school. In addition, migrant households were found to have lower education expenditures than non-migrant households, although the reason for this requires further research.

Educational expectations are important predictors of educational attainment for children. However, children's educational expectations are not always aligned with the expectations their parents have for them. Such disagreements may harm children's development. Research on parent-child discrepancies in educational expectations focuses heavily on the consequences of the discrepancies but has tended to less often consider factors that lead to different expectations on the part of parents and children. In the context of China, parents and children may have very different expectations based on their own experiences and origins. This paper takes advantage of a nationally representative and longitudinal survey, the China Educational Panel Study, on both children and parents to investigate how children's migration is associated with parent-child discrepancies in educational expectations. I also link educational expectations and internal migration in a unified framework and study how familial social capital explain such association in China. Results of the multinomial logistic regression models demonstrate that rural origin is negatively associated with shared parent-child expectations, particularly for students in migrant families from rural areas. My analyses also demonstrate that familial social capital, including parent-child interactions, parental investment in school-related activities, parent-teacher interactions, and parent-other interactions, contributes to explaining the relationship between migration status and parent-child discrepancies in educational expectations. Therefore, this study indicates that the urban-rural disparity is not simply a hukou problem but is more embedded in the returns to education. In this case, the elimination of the rural and urban hukou categories is essential but not sufficient to address the huge urban-rural gap. Policymakers may want to promote more on adult education as well as advocate extensive communication between parents, children, and teachers.
