Excerpt from Some Unsolved Social Problems of an University Town The following study of certain community problems in Prince ton, New Jersey was begun in the spring of 1916 at the request of a committee of the Town Club, a social welfare organization of that community. A preliminary investigation was first made which was continued a year latter with a more detailed study of conditions with special reference to problems of Housing, Public Health and Depend ency. Data relating to these topics are contained in the following pages. Much information was collected bearing upon other topics than the ones presented in this volume, especially upon Recreation, Occupa tions, Schools, Government, the Foreign Born, and Negroes. Data relating to these subjects are to be found' scattered through the pages of this study, though not under special heading. It was considered that the material concerning Housing, Public Health, and Dependency was the most important from the point of view of community welfare; hence, attention is directed mainly to these subjects. Excerpt from Housing and Health: The Proceedings of a Round Table at the Twenty-Seventh Annual Conference of the Milbank Memorial Fund, November 15-16, 1950 The question is asked: Are there not key items that will give sensitive enough scores for practical planning purposes? Only careful study of the correlation of individual item scores with total scores will answer this question. The staff has pointed out that abridgement of the method will not be accompanied by comparable reductions in survey costs. Furthermore, they insist that abridgement is likely to result in making the method of much less general value. Excerpt from Defective Housing and the Growth of Children Houses is totally inadequate for the preser vation of health. The poetry of life does not exist for these dwellers in the rooms of our mean streets, which stretch for mile upon mile without variation in their squalid misery. In the East End of London, every here and there, there are squares where trees are planted. To allow of the trees living the houses are well set back, permitting the entry of sunlight and fresh air neces sary for the growth of the trees. Care is taken that the trees are planted at a sufficient distance from one another to prevent over crowding, which would stunt their growth. But in the dwellings where young life is to be brought up no such care is taken. Street upon street is crowded one upon another in apparently endless succession, to the exclusion of everything that makes for growth and health. We know that these conditions are inimical to health. An excellent criterion of the unhealthiness of the housing conditions is to be found in the incidence of tuberculosis, which increases in prevalence as the house accommoda tion becomes more limited and objectionable. Excerpt from Immigrant Health and the Community The material in this volume was gathered by the Division of Health Standards and Care of Studies in Methods of Americanization. Americanization in this study has been considered as the union of native and foreign born in all the most fundamental relationships and activities of our national life. For Americanization is the uniting of new with native-born Americans in fuller common understanding and appreciation to secure by means of self-government the highest welfare of all. Such Americanization should perpetuate no unchangeable political, domestic, and economic regime delivered once for all to the fathers, but a growing and broadening national life, inclusive of the best wherever found. With all our rich heritages, Americanism will develop best through a mutual giving and taking of contributions from both newer and older Americans in the interest of the commonweal. This study has followed such an understanding of Americanization. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The New Day in Housing What could be of more vital concern to all public spirited citizens than the subject of decent, adequate housing? Chil dren are still being brought up in dark, ill-ventilated, over crowded, unsafe tenement houses and these structures are to be found not only in New York City but in many of the cities and small communities as well. The social ills and moral dangers consequent upon our neglect of housing have been ably presented by the courts dealing with juvenile offenders, by church, social and civic bodies of every kind. Our govern ment has been and will continue to be compelled to pay in the impaired vitality and health of a large part of its people for the failure in coming to grips with this situation on a large scale.
