"This book by Ansgar Wucherpfennig is a welcome and refreshing resource for anybody interested in learning more about not only the origins of the Eucharist but also what early Christian communities witnessed to in their own reception and practice of the Lord's Supper.... This small book will be challenging for some, affirming for others, yet enlightening for all. And the questions and topics it inspires for discussion will surely deepen every reader's appreciation for the history and lived practice of the Eucharist." --from the foreword At the last supper with his disciples, Jesus thought more about life than about death. For him, the focus was on the meal, the eating together--not atonement. Correspondingly, in the early days of Christianity people met for feasts in which they experienced the presence of the Risen One.These celebrations had different forms and yet were connected in unity. This book shows that the role of women, ministry, and ecumenism in the Eucharist must be rethought. Ansgar Wucherpfennig, SJ, is a German Roman Catholic priest, theologian, and New Testament scholar. He is coeditor of the Frankfurt Theological Studies, member of the working group of Catholic New Testament Students (AKN), the working group for Theology and Spirituality (AGTS), the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) and the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (SNTS). +

A revelatory exploration of the Jewish roots of the Last Supper that seeks to understand exactly what happened at Jesus’ final Passover. “Clear, profound and practical—you do not want to miss this book.”—Dr. Scott Hahn, author of The Lamb’s Supper and The Fourth Cup Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as: What was the Passover like at the time of Jesus? What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah? What was Jesus’ purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover? And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, “This is my body… This is my blood”? To answer these questions, Pitre explores ancient Jewish beliefs about the Passover of the Messiah, the miraculous Manna from heaven, and the mysterious Bread of the Presence. As he shows, these three keys—the Passover, the Manna, and the Bread of the Presence—have the power to unlock the original meaning of the Eucharistic words of Jesus. Along the way, Pitre also explains how Jesus united the Last Supper to his death on Good Friday and his Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Inspiring and informative, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist is a groundbreaking work that is sure to illuminate one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith: the mystery of Jesus’ presence in “the breaking of the bread.”

The Eucharist goes back to the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. It is based on the prayer of thanksgiving that Jesus pronounced over the bread and wine at that meal. "Eucharist" means thanksgiving, praise and blessing. The Church celebrates the Eucharist as a memorial of the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The memorial of the Eucharist is more than a remembrance of the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. In the Eucharist the sacrifice of our redemption becomes present sacramentally. In the past, dogmatic theology has treated the meaning of the Eucharist while disregarding the form of its liturgical celebration, whereas liturgical studies have been content with the latter. Yet the two cannot be separated, however, any more than liturgy and dogma or pastoral practice and doctrine can. For the Church’s liturgy is not about something external to Christian revelation, but rather about "revelation accepted in faith and prayer" (Joseph Ratzinger). In this work Helmut Hoping combines the approaches of dogmatic theology and liturgy while examining the Eucharist from an historical and systematic perspective. The second German edition of this major work, which this new English translation is taken from, was revised and expanded, adding a comparative analysis of the Second Eucharistic Prayer and a chapter on the theology of the words of institution.

In addition to this, he analyzes another mystery of faith: the Paschal, Passover, or Easter Mystery of Christ's life, death, resurrection, and return." "The book outlines several desirable inner qualities with which we greet the Risen Christ as our guest, and describes ways in which the Eucharist can inspire us to serve others. Each chapter begins with a personal reflection by a eucharistic minister and concludes with a brief related excerpt from the Catechism of the Catholic Church."--BOOK JACKET.

There is no greater need in the Catholic Church today than to assist our younger generations in understanding the Holy Eucharist. Such understanding is crucial to having greater participation in their Catholic faith. It is church teaching that the consecration of the Eucharist changes the nature of bread and wine into the body and blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The church calls this change transubstantiation, which is a miracle because it is a supernatural event. The miracle of the Eucharist extends to the linkage of our soul to our Divine Lord, whereby we share in his divinity. Divinity is a mystery because it is beyond the nature of earthly things. The transformation of our souls to become more closely aligned with our Divine Lord is an extension of the miracle of transubstantiation. The acceptance of church teaching as regards the Eucharist is an embrace of his words at the last supper to do this in memory of me. It is the optimal way humans have to express their love of their Redeemer.
