This study explores interest in physics, chemistry and biology among school students in Kerala. It used a sample of 3236 (1659 boys, 1577 girls) students studying in upper primary to higher secondary classes. Three separate versions of scale of interest in science were used to quantify interest in science of upper primary, secondary and higher secondary levels. In order to make the scores from the three versions comparable, raw scores were transformed into standard scores. Among both girls and boys, interest in science topics is highest during primary stage than during secondary schooling. During upper primary schooling, interests in both physical and biological sciences are equal among girls, while boys have more interest in biology than physical sciences. During secondary schooling the difference between interests in biological science and physical science become more pronounced, while the reverse happens among boys. By higher secondary level, chemistry is the least liked science subject among both boys and girls, but girls like physics only as much as chemistry; while boys prefer physics much more than chemistry. Boys, more than girls, wanted to know more about physics topics whereas girls' interests lay more in the biological sciences; younger students expressed more positive attitudes toward science than did older students. The study concludes that as interest develops very early in life and influences students future choices, monitoring it should begin from primary school itself. Leaving it unnoticed in the developing stages is detrimental as, it would be quite difficult to make people appreciate science. (Contains 3 tables and 3 figures.).

Throughout the Western world, the relationship between gender, science and math ematics has emerged as critical in a variety of contexts. While boys and girls enter school with equal ability, girls are marginalized in science and math to the point that they trail males in science interest and participation by graduation time. However, such differences have decreased. While attitudes, achievement levels, and the other components of "the science education experience" have been quantitatively examined, very little qualitative analysis exists to describe the educational experience of females in American high school classrooms from the perspective of the student. A description of this phenomenon as constructed through the experiences of female students represents a worthy pursuit. There is an increasing concern about the labor shortage in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in the workforce in U.S. The present study examined the issue by looking at the career interest development during adolescence. The study investigated how gender, race and academic performance are related to the early STEM career interests, the nature of the changes of these career interests, and how gender, race and academic performance accounted for these career interest changes. Archival assessment data of more than three thousand students from the Memphis City Schools were used in the study. The data contained students’ academic performance scores and career interest rating scores when they were 8th graders and then 10th graders. The results of the study showed that gender, race and academic performance were all related to STEM career interests. However, no interaction effects were found among the three factors on STEM career interests. Furthermore, from grade 8 to grade 10, students experienced dramatic increases in the career interest of Technical, but didn’t experience significant change in the career interest of Science and Technology. On the other hand, even though students did not show a significant change in the career dimension of Science and Technology, students who improved their academic performance in Science did exhibit a significant rating score increase in the career dimension of Science and Technology. Finally, for those students who improved their academic performance in Math, only males exhibited a significant increase in the career interests of both Technical and Science/Technology; and when students improved their academic performance in Science, only males exhibited a significant increase in career interest of Technical. .
