HOW FORBIDDEN MEDICINE HEALED MY DEPRESSION. BEFORE YOU KILL YOURSELF, DO SOME DRUGS IN THE JUNGLEDespite having conventional "success", I found myself at emotional rock bottom. Domestic abuse, rape, depression, eating disorders ... I carried unhealed trauma for over 25 years. I decided to try "banned" spiritual medicine in the jungle as a last-ditch effort to save my life. This crazy, illogical decision changed my life. This is the tale of my life-changing vacation with jungle juice. BOOK PREVIEW: Chapter 1 - HOW I LOST MY SOULI remember exactly when I pushed my soul away.First, when I was 6 years old and being told that I was not wanted by my parents. My parents were having a very difficult time back then.Out of their own pains, they told me to go away. When I couldn't stop crying, they told me to jump off a building. The second time was when I was raped by two men.I was 22. I was shoved into a car and raped by a stranger. Then, when I asked someone I trusted to bring me to the hospital, he chose to rape me again. I was married back then. Not surprisingly, my marriage fell apart shortly after. The third time was when I discovered my partner's betrayal. We spent 5 years of our lives together. We built a business together. I was 29 when I met him.Despite how much I wanted the relationship to work, he never had any intention of being with me. The extent of lies was beyond what my heart could handle. All those times, I asked the Universe to remove my heart so I would never have to feel again.I vowed I would never trust or love anyone again because I never wanted to get hurt. I felt my soul leave because I asked it to.And I died. From that point on, I just existed. That was the only way I knew to continue living. I isolated myself from others.I didn't want to let anyone in.I only attracted people who were also empty. We had superficial relationships at the best.CHAPTERS:1. HOW I LOST MY SOUL2. LIVING NUMB3. How To Change Your Mind written by Michael Pollan and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-15 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

“Pollan keeps you turning the pages . . . cleareyed and assured.” —New York Times A #1 New York Times Bestseller, New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2018, and New York Times Notable Book A brilliant and brave investigation into the medical and scientific revolution taking place around psychedelic drugs--and the spellbinding story of his own life-changing psychedelic experiences When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third. Thus began a singular adventure into various altered states of consciousness, along with a dive deep into both the latest brain science and the thriving underground community of psychedelic therapists. Pollan sifts the historical record to separate the truth about these mysterious drugs from the myths that have surrounded them since the 1960s, when a handful of psychedelic evangelists inadvertently catalyzed a powerful backlash against what was then a promising field of research. A unique and elegant blend of science, memoir, travel writing, history, and medicine, How to Change Your Mind is a triumph of participatory journalism. By turns dazzling and edifying, it is the gripping account of a journey to an exciting and unexpected new frontier in our understanding of the mind, the self, and our place in the world. The true subject of Pollan's "mental travelogue" is not just psychedelic drugs but also the eternal puzzle of human consciousness and how, in a world that offers us both suffering and joy, we can do our best to be fully present and find meaning in our lives.

Equal parts true crime, twentieth-century history, and science thriller, The Poisoner's Handbook is "a vicious, page-turning story that reads more like Raymond Chandler than Madame Curie." —The New York Observer “The Poisoner’s Handbook breathes deadly life into the Roaring Twenties.” —Financial Times “Reads like science fiction, complete with suspense, mystery and foolhardy guys in lab coats tipping test tubes of mysterious chemicals into their own mouths.” —NPR: What We're Reading A fascinating Jazz Age tale of chemistry and detection, poison and murder, The Poisoner's Handbook is a page-turning account of a forgotten era. In early twentieth-century New York, poisons offered an easy path to the perfect crime. Science had no place in the Tammany Hall-controlled coroner's office, and corruption ran rampant. However, with the appointment of chief medical examiner Charles Norris in 1918, the poison game changed forever. Together with toxicologist Alexander Gettler, the duo set the justice system on fire with their trailblazing scientific detective work, triumphing over seemingly unbeatable odds to become the pioneers of forensic chemistry and the gatekeepers of justice. In 2014, PBS's AMERICAN EXPERIENCE released a film based on The Poisoner's Handbook.

When Brute Force Fails written by Mark A. R. Kleiman and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-08-17 with Political Science categories.

Since the crime explosion of the 1960s, the prison population in the United States has multiplied fivefold, to one prisoner for every hundred adults--a rate unprecedented in American history and unmatched anywhere in the world. Even as the prisoner head count continues to rise, crime has stopped falling, and poor people and minorities still bear the brunt of both crime and punishment. When Brute Force Fails explains how we got into the current trap and how we can get out of it: to cut both crime and the prison population in half within a decade. Mark Kleiman demonstrates that simply locking up more people for lengthier terms is no longer a workable crime-control strategy. But, says Kleiman, there has been a revolution--largely unnoticed by the press--in controlling crime by means other than brute-force incarceration: substituting swiftness and certainty of punishment for randomized severity, concentrating enforcement resources rather than dispersing them, communicating specific threats of punishment to specific offenders, and enforcing probation and parole conditions to make community corrections a genuine alternative to incarceration. As Kleiman shows, "zero tolerance" is nonsense: there are always more offenses than there is punishment capacity. But, it is possible--and essential--to create focused zero tolerance, by clearly specifying the rules and then delivering the promised sanctions every time the rules are broken. Brute-force crime control has been a costly mistake, both socially and financially. Now that we know how to do better, it would be immoral not to put that knowledge to work.
