This thesis investigates the mechanisms that underlie the interaction of gesture and speech during the production and comprehension of language on a temporal and semantic level. The results from the two gesture-speech production experiments provide unambiguous evidence that gestural content is shaped online by the ways in which speakers package information into planning units in speech rather than being influenced by how events are lexicalised. In terms of gesture-speech synchronisation, a meta-analysis of these experiments showed that lexical items which are semantically related to the gesture's content (id est, semantic affiliates) compete for synchronisation when these affiliates are separated within a sentence. This competition leads to large proportions of gestures not synchronising with any semantic affiliate. These findings demonstrate that gesture onset can be attracted by lexical items that do not co-occur with the gesture. The thesis then tested how listeners process gestures when synchrony is lost and whether preceding discourse related to a gesture's meaning impacts gesture interpretation and processing. Behavioural and ERP results show that gesture interpretation and processing is discourse dependent. Moreover, the ERP experiment demonstrates that when synchronisation between gesture and semantic affiliate is not present the underlying integration processes are different from synchronous gesture-speech combinations.

Through constant exposure to adult input in interaction, children’s language gradually develops into rich linguistic constructions containing multiple cross-modal elements subtly used together for communicative functions. Sensorimotor schemas provide the "grounding" of language in experience and lead to children’s access to the symbolic function. With the emergence of vocal or signed productions, gestures do not disappear but remain functional and diversify in form and function as children become skilled adult multimodal conversationalists. Co-speech gestures are hand movements that are a common occurrence in language production. These gestures are a form of action that are special in that they have been found to interact with speech during production and to influence listeners' comprehension of the message. Borrowing from psycholinguistic theories such as the production-distribution-comprehension framework of language production and comprehension, the present research aims to situate gesture's role in language production and comprehension through the mechanism of prediction. In a series of experiments, listeners are shown to adjust their predictions of the intensity of an action described by a speaker. Listeners are also shown to alter their gesture production after exposure to gesture patterns from a speaker in a video. However, no support was found for the hypothesis that listeners adjust their intensity predictions after immediate exposure to gesture patterns. The results of this work imply that regularities in hand gesture production can inform listeners about the speaker's message. These experiments showed that listeners can make use of existing gestural regularities to generate predictions about source events. Moreover, even though listeners did not reproduce the speaker's gesture regularities perfectly, the findings showed that listeners are indeed sensitive to immediate prior experience with the gesture patterns of a speaker. In the context of the production-distribution-comprehension framework (MacDonald, 2013), these results show that gestures do play a role in language comprehension and production. When gesture production occurs in a consistent manner to create statistical regularities in interpersonal communication, these regularities can give rise to predictions on the part of listeners regarding the occurrence of a speaker's gestures and even influence their subsequent gesture production. These findings question the assumptions behind a long-standing debate surrounding the communicative or non-communicative function of gestures.

The International Gesture Workshops (GW) are interdisciplinary events for those researching gesture-based communication across the disciplines. The focus of these events is a shared interest in understanding gestures and sign language in their many facets, and using them for advancing human–machine interaction. Since 1996, International Gesture Workshops have been held roughly every second year, with fully reviewed proceedings published by Springer. The International Gesture Workshop GW 2009 was hosted by Bielefeld University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF – Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung) during February 25–27, 2009. Like its predecessors, GW 2009 aimed to provide a platform for participants to share, discuss, and criticize recent and novel research with a multidisciplinary audience. More than 70 computer scientists, linguistics, psychologists, neuroscientists as well as dance and music scientists from 16 countries met to present and exchange their newest results under the umbrella theme “Gesture in Embodied Communication and Human–Computer Interaction. ” Consistent with the steady growth of research activity in this area, a large number of high-quality submissions were received, which made GW 2009 an exciting and important event for anyone interested in gesture-related technological research relevant to human–computer interaction. In line with the practice of previous gesture workshops, presenters were invited to submit theirs papers for publication in a subsequent peer-reviewed publication of high quality. The present book is the outcome of this effort. Representing the research work from eight countries, it contains a selection of 28 thoroughly reviewed articles.

Or are gestures crucial to conversation after all and if so, how? After introducing some basic knowledge about gestures I would like to focus on these questions that are concerned with the communicative functions. However, communication purposes which are mostly associated with gestures are only one part of the picture. There is also a lot of relevant research about the role of gestures in speech production as well and also on their impact on memorising and learning. Hence, I will cover all three approaches which are subdivided into different theories and weigh them up against each other.
