"THE author of this excellent little guide has devoted almost his whole life to the art of gymnastics and his position in Norway and in this country as a teacher in various educational institutions has fitted him to speak authoritatively upon the subject. Prof. Nissen looks upon the Swedish system of educational gymnastics as the best one and its introduction in the Boston public schools has been attended by the happiest results. The system embraces more than the perfunctory calisthenics which are so common and which are so imperfectly taught that, in many instances, physical deformities are the only results attained. "One noteworthy feature of the hand-book before us is the fact that the exercises are graded to the capabilities of the various grades adopted in the public schools, from the youngest scholars to those who are in the highest grade of the grammar school. The exercises are copiously illustrated and a course is prescribed for each day, the length of time it should last being also indicated. "There can be no two opinions as to the value of this guide and as a sound body is necessary for the individual to have a sound mind, simple gymnastics such as are given in this little book cannot fail in producing good effects. "The author takes up the exercises in groups of a "day's order" after the usual method in the Swedish system. Taking up firstly, order for attention; secondly, leg work; thirdly, head movements; fourthly, arm movements; fifthly, balancing; and sixthly, respiratory exercises. This sequence is followed throughout, the exercises in each group becoming more difficult with the advancement of the pupil. The exercises are explained as clearly as is possible without personal instruction, and it would be a valuable book of reference to anyone who is required to teach these movements. Excerpt from Handbook of School-Gymnastics of the Swedish System: With One Hundred Consecutive Tables of Exercises and an Appendix of Classified Lists of Movements The history of Swedish gymnastics in America may be said to have begun with the work of Dr. George H. Taylor, who, after studying in Sweden, introduced the "movement cure" into this country, and who for years was the only American writer on this subject. He was soon followed by stray medical gymnasts who located in the larger cities of the East. Yet their work seems to have been confined to a small area, for as late as seven years ago very little was known of medical gymnastics even among physicians; and as for the educational branch, no one seemed to have heard of it. The author of this book was surprised to find his profession looked upon as one of the lowest. That a masseur or gymnast needed to possess not only a good general education, but a professional one as well, was known to but few. During the last five years, however, gymnastics have been slowly, but surely, advancing towards a place among the sciences, and it will not be long before we shall begin to see a marked change in the national characteristics. In 1887 the author published a little pamphlet entitled "Medical Gymnastics," which chanced to fall into the hands of a noted philanthropist.
