In this guideline, the World Health Organization (WHO) provides the most current and relevant evidence-based global public health guidance on the initiation of treatment with pharmacological agents for hypertension in adults. The recommendations target adult, non-pregnant patients who were appropriately diagnosed with hypertension and counselled about life-style modifications. The guideline provides new recommendations on the threshold for the initiation of pharmacological treatment for hypertension, as well as recommendations on intervals for follow up, target blood pressure to be achieved for control, and the cadre of health care workers who may initiate treatment. The guideline provides the basis for deciding whether to initiate treatment with monotherapy, dual therapy or single-pill combinations, as well as guidance for countries selecting medicines and algorithms for hypertension control for their national guidelines for hypertension management.

Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels. This book is a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and management of high blood pressure. Divided into three sections, the text begins with an overview of the condition, current guidelines on its management, potential organ damage, and nonpharmacological treatments. The next section covers the management of hypertension with associated disorders such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney disease, and more. A complete chapter discusses ‘white coat’ hypertension. The final section discusses management approaches when initial treatment fails, and hypertensive emergencies. Each chapter is presented as a case scenario, describing background, previous control attempts, challenges and treatments. In the thirty years since the advent of efTective pharmacologic treatment for hypertension, the world ofthe hypertensive has been transformed beyond recog nition. The first change involved only malignant hypertensives with enough residual renal parenchyma to survive. Such a hypertensive could trade inevitable renal failure - unless an intracerebral bleed occurred first - for a rigid regimen which prevented his blood pressure from destroying him but which was asso ciated with nearly intolerable side effects. Over the next 20 years, increasing numbers of patients with hypertension of decreasing severity were treated with drugs that had fewer and fewer side effects. In 1970, with the medical world finally ready to accept the concept, the well-known Veterans Administration Study demonstrated that morbidity and mortality could be diminished in mode rately hypertensive patients by antihypertensive therapy that had minimal side effects. As a result there has been a major attempt to bring everyone with elevated blood pressure under lifelong pharmacologic control. It is difficult, however, to know what levels ofblood pressure deserve treatment; many who, when therapy first became available, would not have even been considered hypertensive are now candidates for treatment. The lower the pressure, the larger the potential population to be treated, but the smaller the individual risk and hence the smaller the possible benefit. The point where decades of diminished quaiity of life from treatment begins to outweigh a possible late-life complication is yet to be de termined.

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, affecting nearly one in three Americans. It is prevalent in adults and endemic in the older adult population. Hypertension is a major contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and disability. Although there is a simple test to diagnose hypertension and relatively inexpensive drugs to treat it, the disease is often undiagnosed and uncontrolled. A Population-Based Policy and Systems Change Approach to the Prevention and Control Hypertension identifies a small set of high-priority areas in which public health officials can focus their efforts to accelerate progress in hypertension reduction and control. It offers several recommendations that embody a population-based approach grounded in the principles of measurement, system change, and accountability. The recommendations are designed to shift current hypertension reduction strategies from an individual-based approach to a population-based approach. They are also designed to improve the quality of care provided to individuals with hypertension and to strengthen the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's leadership in seeking a reduction in the sodium intake in the American diet to meet dietary guidelines. The book is an important resource for federal public health officials and organizations, especially the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as medical professionals and community health workers.

High blood pressure is often considered a silent or invisible condition because its symptoms are very mild. But don't let this fool you. Even though it may feel like you don't have a problem due to this 'lack' of symptoms, this doesn't mean it can't cause serious damage to your health. On the contrary, the damage can be quite extensive, especially if you don't recognize that you have high blood pressure in a timely fashion. Learning the most common symptoms of high blood pressure can help you identify them more easily when they do make themselves known, which means you can start treatment as early as possible. High blood pressure is also called hypertension. It's a condition that typically results in damaged or blocked arteries, which reduces how efficiently blood circulates through your body. With elevated blood pressure, more wear and tear are placed on your arteries and heart. High blood pressure can be dangerous because it restricts blood and oxygen supply to different parts of your body. This taxes your body and may lead to organ failure if it's not appropriately managed, though most cases of hypertension don't progress this far if treated and managed appropriately. With the information in this book, you will learn how to treat and manage high blood pressure called hypertension, thus adding not only years to your life, but improving the quality of life too!
