Laugh your head off, and re-read this book constantly for having fun -- "License to Kill" is a Douglas-Adams/Harry-Harrison style novel, a weirdly funny superhero parody, with strong SF&F undertones. In this comedy with an absurd-humor slant, the reader can follow the adventures of Thames Pond, Agent 00, through space and time. The main characters who help Pond against the archenemy Evil Devil -- and his Evil Chip which has awareness and its own goals -- are Ron, the enhanced Norwegian wood cat, Kimi, a magic katana sword of the female gender, Cindy, the android, with her inbuilt cider-machine, Yhurran, the croc goddess, Jack Covering, the intelligent spacesuit, and more. The clues are leading Pond and Co. around the Earth, from military camp in Russia to the rain forest in Brazil, as well as to space stations. There are also several small quests and escapades on the side. The agent had to fight not only his enemies, but also the bureaucrats of his organization. In the end, when all bets seem to be off, the good wins, in a wicked way. The inventive, mad-humor style is similar to Douglas Adams, and Harry Harrison, but the story, the plot, the scenes, the characters and the ploys are unique to the writer. This parody novel has strong science fiction and fantasy undertones, but the style is perhaps more surreal than SF&F. The novel contains features practically from all genres. The book is also a parody of all supernatural.

Mossad is universally recognised as the greatest intelligence service in the world. It is also the most enigmatic, shrouded in a thick veil of secrecy. Many of its enthralling feats are still unknown; most of its heroes remain unnamed. From the kidnapping of Eichmann in Argentina and the systematic tracking down of those responsible for the Munich massacre to lesser-known episodes of astonishing espionage, this extraordinary book describes the dramatic, largely secret history of Mossad and the Israeli intelligence community. Examining the covert operations, the targeted assassinations and the paramilitary activities within and outside Israel, Michael Bar-Zohar and Nissim Mishal detail the great stories of Mossad and reveal the personal tales of some of the best Mossad agents and leaders to serve their country.

Comic Book Movies explores how this genre serves as a source for modern-day myths, sometimes even incorporating ancient mythic figures like Thor and Wonder Woman’s Amazons, while engaging with the questions that haunt a post-9/11 world: How do we define heroism and morality today? How far are we willing to go when fighting terror? How can we resist a dystopian state? Film scholar Blair Davis also considers how the genre’s visual style is equally important as its weighty themes, and he details how advances in digital effects have allowed filmmakers to incorporate elements of comic book art in innovative ways. As he reveals, comic book movies have inspired just as many innovations to Hollywood’s business model, with film franchises and transmedia storytelling helping to ensure that the genre will continue its reign over popular culture for years to come.

The Thing. Daredevil. Captain Marvel. The Human Fly. Drawing on DC and Marvel comics from the 1950s to the 1990s and marshaling insights from three burgeoning fields of inquiry in the humanities—disability studies, death and dying studies, and comics studies—José Alaniz seeks to redefine the contemporary understanding of the superhero. Beginning in the Silver Age, the genre increasingly challenged and complicated its hypermasculine, quasi-eugenicist biases through such disabled figures as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and the Doom Patrol. Alaniz traces how the superhero became increasingly vulnerable, ill, and mortal in this era. He then proceeds to a reinterpretation of characters and series—some familiar (Superman), some obscure (She-Thing). These genre changes reflected a wider awareness of related body issues in the postwar United States as represented by hospice, death with dignity, and disability rights movements. The persistent highlighting of the body’s “imperfection” comes to forge a predominant aspect of the superheroic self. Such moves, originally part of the Silver Age strategy to stimulate sympathy, enhance psychological depth, and raise the dramatic stakes, developed further in such later series as The Human Fly, Strikeforce: Morituri, and the landmark graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel, all examined in this volume. Death and disability, presumed routinely absent or denied in the superhero genre, emerge to form a core theme and defining function of the Silver Age and beyond.
