The teachings, style and impact of the Qur'an have always been matters of controversy, among both Muslims and non-Muslims. But in a modern context of intercultural sensitivity, what the Qur'an says and means are perhaps more urgent questions than ever before. This major new book by one of the world's finest Islamic scholars responds to that urgency. Building on his earlier groundbreaking work, the author challenges misinterpretations of particular Qur'anic verses from whatever quarter. He addresses the infamous 'sword' verse, frequently cited as a justification for jihad. He also questions the 'tribute' verse, associated with the Muslim state subjugating Jews and Christians; and the idea of Paradise in the Qur'an, often viewed by the West as emphasising merely physical pleasures, or used by Islamic fighters as their just reward for holy war. The author argues that wrenching the verses out of the context of the whole has led to dangerous ideologies being built on isolated phrases which have then assumed afterlives of their own. This nuanced, holistic reading has vital interfaith ramifications.

Volume I of the thirty-eight volume translation of Ṭabarī's great History begins with the creation of the world and ends with the time of Noah and the Flood. It not only brings a vast amount of speculation about the early history of mankind into sharp Muslim focus, but it also synchronizes ancient Iranian ideas about the prehistory of mankind with those inspired by the Qur'an and the Bible. The volume is thus an excellent guide to the cosmological views of many of Ṭabarī's contemporaries. The translator, Franz Rosenthal, one of the world's foremost scholars of Arabic, has also written an extensive introduction to the volume that presents all the facts known about Ṭabarī's personal and professional life. Professor Rosenthal's meticulous and original scholarship has yielded a valuable bibliography and chronology of Ṭabarī's writings, both those preserved in manuscript and those alluded to by other authors. The introduction and first volume of the translation of the History form a ground-breaking contribution to Islamic historiography in English and will prove to be an invaluable source of information for those who are interested in Middle Eastern history but are unable to read the basic works in Arabic.

“The world today has become one large village. Muslims and non-Muslims live side by side and have to learn about one another, share commonalities and respect differences. At this time more than one and a half billion Muslims live in this village. Some of them are pious Muslims, trying to live in accordance with Islamic rules, whereas others do not while believing that these rules come from God (the Qur’an), from interpretations of His Messenger (the Sunnah) or the consensus of Muslim jurists (ijmâ‘), and are at least rules derived via analogy (qiyâs) from the main sources of Islam. Most Muslims think along these lines and agree with the above. The reader should remember that Muslim individuals should live according to Islamic rules in private, but no individual is responsible for implementing Islamic law. In any event, the need to learn the facts about Islamic law is necessary for Muslims as well as for non-Muslims if they live in the same society with Muslims, at least in the sense of general information. In any event, the need to learn the facts about Islamic law is necessary for Muslims as well as for non-Muslims if they live in the same society with Muslims, at least in the sense of general information. We should keep in mind here that only sovereign Muslim states/governments have the legal authority to implement Islamic law. An individual Muslim has no legal authority or power to implement Islamic law. The law of Islam certainly does not say that every Muslim is obliged to implement Islamic law. It matters not how efficient and popular that individual may be as a brave warrior or a meticulous planner of unlawful and immoral schemes of hatred, terror and destruction. Only people who are properly qualified and trained, and hold a license from Muslim governmental authorities, have the authority to issue fatwâs. Not every Muslim individual qualifies as a Muftî (a jurist-consult or scholar of law who has been given a license to issue fatwâs.). For this reason Bediuzzaman says: “And we know that the fundamental aims of the Qur’an and its essential elements are fourfold: divine unity (al-tawhîd), prophethood (al-nubuwwah), the resurrection of the dead (al-hashr), and justice (al-ʿadalah). Al-Adâlah means law. He adds in another treatise: “Let our ulul-amr (satesmen and political authorities) think over implementing these rules”. This book is divided into eight chapters. Chapter I.Because of the many misunderstandings that arise, some terms related to Islamic Law, such as Sharî‛ah, fiqh, qânûn, ‘urf, Islamic Law, and Muhammadan Law are explained. Chapter II.Here, in this chapter dedicated to references on Islamic Law, the real added value of this book is found. Chapter III. This chapter looks at four periods of Islamic Law: the period of the Prophet Muhammad, the period of the Companions, the period of the Tabi‘în, and an introduction to the period of Mujtahidîn. Chapter IV. We will provide detailed information here on the different law schools and theological divisions. Chapter V. This chapter will be devoted to a period of Islamic law that has been neglected in both old and new books and articles, i.e. the period of Islamic Law after the Turks converted to Islam (960-1926). Chapter VI. This chapter will focus also on three main subjects: Anglo-Muhammadan law (Indo-Muslim law), Syariah or Islamic Law in Southeast Asia, and Islamic Law in contemporary Muslim states like Egypt, Pakistan, Morocco, Indonesia and Jordan. Chapter VII. We will explain the system and methodology of Islamic Law in this chapter. Chapter VIII. We will give some brief information here on the implementation of Islamic Law, its future; some encyclopedical works on Islamic law, and new institutions of Islamic fiqh.”

And 13. Words Risale-i Nur (Treatise of Light) Training Program This book which is entitled "Qur'an, Modern Science and Philosophy" and which is an explanatory work based on 11th, 12th and 13th Words of Risale-i Nur, comparatively deals with the perspectives of the universe by Qur'an, modern science and philosophy; and the differences of interpretation they develop and the different meanings they make out of the same information they have. When you complete the book, you will have a striking appreciation of the profound differences of the lessons given by the philosophy and science which look at the universe from an ungodly perspective and you will have acquired the most basic and accurate Qur'anic terms in making sense of this universe. In 11. Word: We discover the hidden secret of the creation of man and the universe with the help of a wonderful example (The Story of the Creation of Our Universe) and we invite you to a completely different mental journey and we promise that we will go to places you have never travelled before on this imaginary journey that we will start together. Here are some of the questions we ask: Why are we here, who sent us here, and where do we go from here? Who are we and what is required of us? Why couldn’t the mind find its way on its own, alone? What is the true form of the universe and the cause of man's creation? From which perspective should we look at the universe in order to discover the truth about it? What do we see if we look at the world as a new visitor? Why are we in need of the creatures/created things which come into existence by chance? Why is the nature, existing in the world and in the universe, so beautiful? In 12. Word: We compare Qur'an, philosophy, and modern science in terms of understanding and giving meaning to the universe. Thus, the profound difference between, on the one hand Qur'an and on the other hand, philosophy and science, which look at the universe from an irreligious perspective, emerges strikingly. Our "A Gift Pack", however, will take you to another world, with the strength of its logical rules and poeticalness of its literary depictions. In 13. Word: Right after a pleasant and short trip of history of science, we begin a fictional journey in "Cosmic Calendar" and we search for the answers of the following questions: "What should one expect to get from a product made in the name of science? How should its value be assessed?" and we witness that those who could fine what the world "fine-tuning" means and who appreciate it, will graduate from the "Academy of Universe" with a high degree of success. In this way, having given an exemplary lesson about the fact that religion and sciences of Qur'an and Philosophy produce products, in the name of science, that are quite different from each other., it is proved with a striking determination that Qur'an has such a high degree of scientificness compared to positive sciences. We would like you to accompany us in this imaginary and mental journey of discovery. There is only one fixed price for a ticket of the Journey: A strong sense of wonder in the search for truth. This work is a part of our basic/source book called “A Journey of Discovery for an Extraordinary Treasure: Risale-i Nur (The Treatise of Light) Training Program” upon which our “Journeys of Discovery, Risale-i Nur Training Program” is constructed and it is “The comparison of Qur'an, Philosophy and Modern Science in Understanding the Secret of the Universe”, which is the fourth discovery of the five discovery, dealt with in the first main part of that book, which is called “Discovering the Value of the Treasure of Faith”. We strongly suggest and present this book to those who regularly read Risale-i Nur as well as to those who want to get some information for the first time. The epilogue of our book which is entitled “Your Journey Just Begins Now!” is also included in this work as it contains emotional, striking and impressive points coming sincerely from the deepest parts of our hearts about the reading of Risale-i Nur and attendance to the Risale-i Nur Lectures. BOOK INDEX I- The comparison of Qur'an, Philosophy and Modern Science in Understanding the Secret of the Universe * The Story of the Creation of Our Universe (11. Word): We discover the hidden secret of the creation of man and the universe with the help of a wonderful example. * A Gift Package (12. Thus, the profound difference between, on the one hand Qur'an and on the other hand, philosophy and science, which look at the universe from an irreligious perspective, emerges strikingly. * To Graduate from the Academy of Universe (A chapter taken from the Thirteenth Word): Having given an exemplary lesson about the fact that religion and sciences of Qur'an and Philosophy produce products, in the name of science, that are quite different from each other., it is proved with a striking determination that Qur'an has such a high degree of scientificness compared to positive sciences. The Qur'an Revealed is a landmark publication in the history of Islamic studies, providing for the first time a comprehensive critical analysis of Bedizuzzaman Said Nursi's 6000-page work of Quranic exegesis, The Epistles of Light. In discussing a wide range of themes, from Divine unity to causation, from love to spirituality, from prophethood to civilization and politics, Colin Turner invites the reader into Nursi's conceptual universe, presenting the teachings of arguably the Muslim world's most understudied theologian in a language that is accessible to both expert and interested layperson alike.

The Qur’an and the Bible have been called "intertwined scriptures" due to the Qur’an’s frequent invocation of biblical narratives and figures. But what is the history of Muslims’ exegetical engagement with the biblical text? Through a comprehensive survey of more than 170 Qur’an commentaries, Samuel Ross traces the longitudinal history of the Bible in tafsῑr. Offering detailed case studies and rich in historical context, Ross’s narrative culminates in the remarkable late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century biblical turn. Global in scope, this development has not only generated new Muslim views of the Bible but even new interpretations of the Qur’an itself. This monograph has been awarded the annual BRAIS – De Gruyter Prize in the Study of Islam and the Muslim World.

The Qur An In Christian Muslim Dialogue written by Corrie Block and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-08 with Religion categories.

Offering an analysis of Christian-Muslim dialogue across four centuries, this book highlights those voices of ecumenical tone which have more often used the Qur’an for drawing the two faiths together rather than pushing them apart, and amplifies the voice of the Qur’an itself. Finding that there is tremendous ecumenical ground between Christianity and Islam in the voices of their own scholars, this book ranges from a period of declining ecumenism during the first three centuries of Islam, to a period of resurging ecumenism during the most recent century until now. Among the ecumenical voices in the Christian-Muslim dialogue, this book points out that the Qur’an itself is possibly the strongest of those voices. These findings are cause for, and evidence of, hope for the Christian–Muslim relationship: that although agreement may never be reached, dialogue has led at times to very real mutual understanding and appreciation of the religious other. Providing a tool for those pursuing understanding and mutual appreciation between the Islamic and Christian faiths, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of Islam, the Qur’an and the history of Christian-Muslim relations.
