I’ve been a practicing psychologist in an outpatient setting for over thirty-two years. I run into eight conditions or "issues" almost every day (addictions, anxiety, ADHD/learning disabilities, assertiveness, children's behaviors, mood disorders, relationships and self-esteem). Teenager's behavior is a subset of children's behavior, and is especially problematic. Parents usually don't know what to do during this rite of passage--this potentially very troublesome period kids go through. I've developed a unique set of techniques, but also a philosophy that works very well with both younger kids and teenagers. It applies principles of behavior change with an understaning of what teenager's experience. The result is that parents and teens re-connect and behavior changes, usually on the part of both. Here's the overview of what's in this latest ebook: First, there is a description of the terms I use throughout the manuscript. Teachers and people familiar with therapy will recognize some of them. Others are unique to me. There's eight or nine you need to know. Then, we get down to business. I start by guiding you through behavior selection; that is, what is it you want to change about your teen? This is straightforward, but the twist is that I don't work primarily with negative behaviors; rather, I focus on the opposite of them--the ones that are positive and cancel out the negative ones. This is unique. In the literature, there are three ways to reinforce behaviors, but my way is the fourth. You won't find this anywhere else. Ever heard of the Four-To-One-Rule? Not likely, because its something I discovered over years of practice. I use it specifically with the technique just described. This is what I use instead of punishment, whenever possible. Just in case you think punishment is not discussed, there are several pages devoted to just this concept--where and when to use it, but most importantly, when and why not to use it. Next comes a section on Philosophy, Strategies and Examples. There are lots and lots of examples. I have another unique-to-me concept--The Dance. This is the intricate interaction parents and children experience from day one to maturity. I describe it in detail, and how to conceptualize it to manage errant teen behaviors. Because teenagers are beset (not to mention hugely burdened) by hormones, they react to situations in an exaggerated way. I describe how to assess this and when to call in a specialist. In other words, what is normal and what is not normal behavior at this age? Many parents do not know. This brings into discussion teenager's needs, followed by a discussion of teen's moods--both amplified by developmental stage, and again, by hormones. Needs and moods are discussed in the context of the twelve most common areas of conflict between parents and teenagers (Out of home activities, curfews, privacy, safety, electronics, comparative age, makeup, dating and sex, driving, grades, criminal behaviors, drugs and alcohol and visitation between parents if they are divorced). Specific examples of each are provided and how to handle them. The next section is called, "Putting It All Together." In detail, I describe exactly what to do with your teenager, given any particular problem area. The last section deals with kids who are outside the scope of my ebook, or any self-help manuscript. These are the kids who have significant compromises, sometimes through no fault of their own. Medical conditions, personality disorders, deliberate maliciousness, medication, RTC's, and lastly, being the victims of nasty parental divorces are covered. These conditions slow down parent's ability to connect with their teens, although my techniques still work to quell the fires of rebellion. How to deal with the deeper stuff is what I cover here, and why these have to be addressed before anything else will work, including what I have to offer. Ebooks are evolving and now have considerable depth. Usually they, and mine specifically, are single subject treatises. They deal with just one topic--"how to's" about any given problem. This one is is aimed specifically at teen behaviors and what to do about them. It's concise, loaded with relevant information and immediately available. Regular books require more effort to obtain, and they cost more. Most of these books are too long. I’ve boiled down the concepts in these books, but have added my own unique views and experience. And, I’ve made this as easy to understand as is humanly possible. Like my other ebooks, this one has no fat. Think of it as a "Cliffs Notes" publication. It's "sort of" a quick read (about two hours, on average). I have to explain a few new terms, because there are new ideas and the terms you probably already know are put together in new ways. The theory I espouse is different from standard "behavior change" books. It works better and is very simple to understand. That's the point of an ebook. My research has not turned up another ebook that does what mine does.

Two clinical social workers offer clinicians, educators, coaches, and other youth counselors the first professional book that focuses on engaging authentically with teens in order to create lasting change. Anyone who works with teens should read this book. If you work with teens, you know they are notoriously challenging to communicate with. And when teens are resistant to help, they may respond by acting defiant, guarded, defensive, rude, or even outright hostile. In turn, you may respond by reasserting your authority—resulting in an endless power struggle. So how can you break the cycle and start connecting? In What Works with Teens, you’ll discover the core skills that research shows underlie all effective work with teens. You'll learn how to engage authentically with teens, create an atmosphere of mutual respect, and use humor to establish a deeper connection. Many books offer evidence-based approaches to treating teens, but very little information on how to establish and maintain a productive working relationship. This is the first trans-therapeutic book to provide real tools for creating a positive relationship with teens to help bolster effective treatment. Whether your background is in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), psychotherapy, or any other treatment background, if you are looking for more effective ways to connect with teens and are ready for a program that really works, this book is a vital addition to your professional library.

Disciplining teenagers is a whole other beast than disciplining children. Teenagers are more than hormonal misfits, and it sometimes takes a delicate hand to figure what type of discipline works for each teenager. Unlike children, teenagers can comprehend the difference between right and wrong on an intellectual level. In fact, during the teenage years, teens figure out that the only reason there are starving people in the world is because of money. To them, that is a superficial reason to keep someone from eating. There is a certain level of idealism that comes into play when you are dealing with teens. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction What is your teenager acting out? Here are a few examples of acting out. 1. TOP THREE PARENTING MISTAKES THAT LEAD TO ARGUING: Have you tried everything and haven’t been able to get the respect and great behavior from your child that you deserve? Hello from Norway;-) My name is Terje Nordkvelle, and after working as a coach for teenagers for over a decade, I have experienced that these are the most common mistakes parents make - and tips to what you can do instead. 1: Parents deciding and giving advice too often. TIP: Ask your child for answers. We all like to make our own decisions, and with ownership of a change, it increases the chance of the teen going through with it. 2: Parents addressing mostly the negative. TIP: Give 80 percent of your attention to the behavior you are satisfied with. Then some of the problems tend to fade away. 3: Parents interrupting. TIP: Be present as a good listener. Kids do not need our presents. They need our presence. 4: Parents going on autopilot, and being controlled by emotions. TIP: Continue reading for more advice. COACH'S SECRETS: By trial and error, I've experienced what it takes to build strong relationships with teens and stop their bad behavior. I share these methods in my ebook "Seven Steps to a Positive Change in Your Teenager." In this guide, you will learn the seven easy steps that quickly motivate your kid to do tasks at home, get better self-esteem, and become happier. INGRID: "Step 1 had a very good effect on my son... an extraordinary reaction!" With my British editor, Diane Weller, we covered these topics: * How to keep calm and in control. * Tips to stop arguing, make the youth listen. * Create a better relationship. * Motivate them to do tasks. * Increase self-esteem, help them to open up. RITA: "Yesterday we had a long conversation and she opened up more. Today, she has been in a much better mood." Do you transfer your insecurity to your child? Without knowing it? The first part is written to make sure you avoid that. The seven steps start on page 30. Steps 1 and 2 are really easy and fun and great for creating trust, so start with them. RENATE: "I have purchased a great book. The advice works! Thank you." So, what's the smartest thing you can do to create a great relationship? How to master kids' anger and parenting without the struggle? There is an excellent answer to that question. And here's the secret I discovered: The key to a really good relationship lies in how well teenagers like themselves - in conversation with you. That's the solution! Instilling good self-esteem is the most important job you can do. My step-by-step-roadmap aims to ensure that your communication with your child leads to an inner feeling of security that they will enjoy for the rest of their lives. NICOLE: "This book is a source of inspiration for me in my work with children and youth. This book means a lot to me." Soon you can experience a warm relationship with authentic conversations where the teenager opens up and listens to you. The book helps your child to: * Be positive and confident. * Be interested in listening to you. Good luck to you! Terje. (If you have questions, please contact me here: [email protected])

To Change A Mind written by John A. McKinnon and has been published by Lantern Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Family & Relationships categories.

In this companion to his first book, An Unchanged Mind, Dr. McKinnon provides invaluable advice to all parents of teenagers and young adults. Using case studies gathered from his years helping parents with troubled adolescents, the author explores the ways that adolescent development can be derailed in today's complex culture and how parents can prevent this from happening in the first place. Dr. McKinnon writes about how parents need to recognize their children as individuals, with their own feelings and opinions, as they start to establish their separate identities as young people and begin to negotiate their way through high school and beyond. He also makes clear that parents must continue to establish limits. These allow children to flourish and further their goals within boundaries that enable them to learn the consequences of their actions (both good and bad), thus providing a fundamental lesson of being an adult. The book explains that parental recognition and limit-setting work together to promote maturity. Packed with examples and sensible and practical advice for parents of pre-teens and teenagers, To Change a Mind is an essential guidebook for parents seeking to make their lives--and the lives of their children--richer and more fulfilling, as the family navigates together the potentially treacherous seas of adolescence.

This publication on adolescent health and positive behaviour change is seen as an important public health issue. It presents the collection and reporting of the application of behavioral change theories and models specifically to adolescents. It represents an attempt to incorporate a developmental perspective in the conceptual analysis of these classical theoretical constructs when applied to the various stages of adolescence.Cultural, ethnic, and gender differences are also given special consideration, as is the role of poverty and the ability of some adolescents to secure physical and emotional well-being despite circumstances of adversity. This book additionally attempts to explain why some health promotion interventions aimed at positive adolescent behavior change produce the desired results, while others fail. A diversity of geographical settings are cited: from Africa to the United States, Canada to Jamaica, Brazil to the Netherlands, El Salvador to Japan, and India to Mexico, amongst them.
