This book speaks to the reader of the time past. It will make you yearn for those old times and yet make you realize the mistakes you did and how they affected to present. "Gimme Some Truth", a song by John Lennon, strikes a chord with me because of its compelling message. That song is the cornerstone of my faith in the American Dream. It reminds me that it is every American's right to disagree. It shows how you frame an argument is what defines you. How far you take it is your choice, but what you do with your difference of opinion is the true test of character. Until the full realization of the American Dream of equality, fraternity, truth, and justice are achieved, you cannot claim you live in a free society.

"Freedom Without Permission takes the idea of human liberty seriously, not just as a policy for a free society but a personal philosophy for free people. There is so much wisdom here. A careful reading will save you years of diversions and get you on the right track toward building a new way of life." -- Jeffrey Tucker Too many people seek permission when trying to advance their own lives. They want external actors to open gates for them without realizing that the gates don't exist. Permission isn't needed and those who think it is create their own barriers to advancing their lives and realizing personal achievement. People believe they must look to others for permission to live their lives. They elect politicians to change the world. They believe schools award education. They believe external validation is the way to a career. They externalize their personal hardships instead of recognizing how often they inflict the hardships onto themselves. They wait for an invitation to create value when the impetus lies in their own hands and minds. They develop dependencies and preconditions that keep them from entrepreneurship. These are all myths. You don't need to ask for permission. But how do you do create a life without permission? The point of this book is to break more than to build. We are not attempting to provide a full-fledged philosophy on life without permission. Instead, the goal is to deconstruct and then offer exercises and habits of thought that will enhance your freedom. The core idea is that you don't need anyone's permission to do the things you want to do in life, or learn what you want to learn or feel how you want to feel. An entire intellectual edifice has been constructed to convince you of the opposite, and most of us start out seeing only though its windows. We want to help you tear it down or at least break a few panes so you can see beyond it and begin to form your own ideas about what your life can be. We wish to shatter some paradigms so you can begin to build your own process of learning and living. We begin with lessons that can be learned from history regarding our own freedom. We then look at politics, then education and move into career and entrepreneurship, finally, we end with practices for personal freedom. We span the process of growing up and moving from learning to living, creating the process as you go. This process requires knowledge (starting with self-knowledge), skill, experience, confidence, and relationships, but it doesn't necessarily require schooling, grades, credentials, or submission to a system or plan created by anyone else. The resources you need are already within you. We peel back some myths and help you see freedom as your own, not something you need permission to enjoy.

Economic and political crises have often led to attacks on freedom. During the Great Depression all the major economies restricted trade by raising tariffs. This knee-jerk reaction only aggravated geo-political tensions and further increased economic hardship. The emergence of radical socialist regimes led to total oppression of civil, political and economic liberties in half the world. More recently, the events of 9/11 and the US reaction have set in motion policies that have sacrificed freedom in an attempt to increase security. Similarly, the global financial crisis that began in 2008, and which was also germinated on US soil, has been followed by increasing controls, regulations and protections. Instead of relying on the creative destruction principle of free markets, governments on both sides of the Atlantic have used huge amounts of taxpayers’ money to bail out failing businesses. Threats to freedom abound. A quarter of a century ago, the world embraced ‘glasnost’ in the Soviet Union and then celebrated the fall of the Berlin Wall. But new challenges have now emerged in the form of neo-nationalism in Europe and radicalism in the Middle East. Both trends will reduce freedom if they go unchecked. In Europe, this reversion to nationalism, and even racism, is taking place despite a relatively high degree of political freedom – a functioning democracy exists. In the Middle East, the rise of religious radicalism is less surprising – neither market nor democracy is in good shape. Despite these problems, individuals in the 21st century are in many respects freer than their predecessors in the previous century. The information and communication technology revolution has brought down all kinds of barriers. In China, for example, Li Chengpeng is a prominent writer and social critic: his Sina Weibo blog has nearly six million followers. And, during the Arab Spring, social media helped bring about widespread political and social progress. If information is power, then information technology has empowered the individual. Geographical boundaries remain, but they are becoming increasingly irrelevant. In this context, the publication of Eamonn Butler’s monograph could not be more timely. Foundations of a Free Society is a welcome addition to the family of modern primers on liberty. Butler’s unique skill lies in his ability to express complex and highly influential ideas in plain English. He also successfully undermines the arguments of critics and opponents with real-world examples that illustrate his ideas and support the theoretical arguments. This Occasional Paper is therefore an excellent introductory text for those who would like to understand the basic principles of a free society. It will be particularly helpful for those promoting freedom in countries where these principles remain largely unknown, as well as for those protecting freedom in places where traditional liberties are under assault.

Foundations of a Free Society brings together some of the most knowledgeable Ayn Rand scholars and proponents of her philosophy, as well as notable critics, putting them in conversation with other intellectuals who also see themselves as defenders of capitalism and individual liberty. United by the view that there is something importantly right—though perhaps also much wrong—in Rand’s political philosophy, contributors reflect on her views with the hope of furthering our understandings of what sort of society is best and why. The volume provides a robust elaboration and defense of the foundation of Rand’s political philosophy in the principle that force paralyzes and negates the functioning of reason; it offers an in-depth scholarly discussion of Rand’s view on the nature of individual rights and the role of government in defending them; it deals extensively with the similarities and differences between Rand’s thought and the libertarian tradition (to which she is often assimilated) and objections to her positions arising from this tradition; it explores Rand’s relation to the classical liberal tradition, specifically with regard to her defense of freedom of the intellect; and it discusses her views on the free market, with special attention to the relation between these views and those of the Austrian school of economics.

It is difficult to create a free society but even more difficult to sustain that free society over time. We want to sustain the esssential elements of a free society, but at the same time, we must recognize that the world is always changing. How, then, to adjust to changes and to improve what we have, without losing sight of core values, is our focus in Sustaining A Free Society. The book first outlines in practical real-world terms fifteen conditions that must be in place to sustain a free society. One critical condition given extended consideration is the need for a long-term time perspective. Conditions do not exist in the abstract: they are created by people and the choices we make. Thus we need to consider the roles and responsibilities of those involved in a free a society: citizens and those they choose as leaders. We are not born knowing our responsibilities as citizens and leaders: these matters have to be learned. Sustaining a Free Society moves to a consideration of the role schools must play in ensuring that future generations know and value a free society and are prepared to in turn assume their responsibilities.
