Wenner–Gren Center International Symposium Series, Volume 13: The Possibilities of Charting Modern Life presents the proceedings of the symposium on Anthropological Research on the Present, held in Stockholm, Sweden, on March 7–11, 1967. This book discusses the greater dependence of culture on central control and influences from outside. Organized into 13 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the possibilities of applying the same methods for the study of the present as have been applied in the ethnology concentrated upon history. This text then clarifies the value of certain functional concepts in the light of the field material from the Tuareg culture. Other chapters consider the concept of applied ethnology, which is not historically oriented. This book discusses as well the gradual shifting of the concept of sex-role from its proper import of expression for the individual's biological statuses. This book is a valuable resource for social anthropologists.

Foreign Cultures written by Lothar Käser and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04 with Social Science categories.

In recent decades foreign cultures have not just loomed large for Europeans seeking holiday destinations. Since the 1960s increasing numbers of professionals such as teachers, doctors, agronomists, and other professional workers and missionaries from Europe and America have been partnering local churches in Africa, Asia and Latin America whose fellowships are often very differently organised. When preparing these specialists, development agencies and missions often overlook the knowledge and insights that ethnology and cultural anthropology have to offer, help that makes it easier for professionals to take their bearings, to be well integrated, and to go about their work more effectively. This book deals with such issues. For future theorists dealing with foreign cultures (ethnologists, anthropologists, etc.) there is now a whole range of brilliantly written textbooks. However, for development aid practitioners, whether secular workers or church workers, these introductory works are overloaded with theory and are thus difficult to digest. What has been missing until now is a simple introduction to the basic concepts which could enable a European working in foreign surroundings to come to terms with the ethnological literature relevant for his activities overseas, to recognise these essential concepts woven into the daily cultural reality of life and work, and to work with them and to bring to bear his or her own analysis. This book is a simplified introduction along these lines, not just written for the target readers just mentioned, but also for students of ethnology/cultural anthropology and for those who frequent ethnological museums. The author is professor of anthropology with relevant experience of the issues. He spent five years working in the South Pacific, and has visited Africa, Asia and South America on many occasions for research.

The subject of the research carried out in different countries under various names (religiose Volkskunde, Volksfrommingkeitsforschung, ethnology of religion, anthropology of religion, etc.) is essentially the same: so-called folk religiosity or popular religion supplementing the practice of dogmatic religions, the everyday practice of religion and, in general, an ethnological/anthropological approach to the study of religious life. What is the epistemological basis of the research? How is the subject of the research defined? What methods are considered suitable for the study of the religious phenomenon? Who are the most important researchers and what are their main publications? Has research on religion become an independent field of research? The answers to these and many other questions are to be found in the studies in this book which present the history of scholarship and research in ethnology of religion as a discipline in fourteen countries of Europe (Belgium/Flanders, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden). They cover a spectrum ranging from classical 19th century ethnographical writings to today's studies of an anthropological nature. The extensive bibliographies make the volume a valuable aid in research and university education.

In what ways did Europeans interact with the diversity of people they encountered on other continents in the context of colonial expansion, and with the peasant or ethnic ‘Other’ at home? How did anthropologists and ethnologists make sense of the mosaic of people and societies during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when their disciplines were progressively being established in academia? By assessing the diversity of European intellectual histories within sociocultural anthropology, this volume aims to sketch its intellectual and institutional portrait. It will be a useful reading for the students of anthropology, ethnology, history and philosophy of science, research and science policy makers.

Excerpt from History and Ethnology It is the aim of this essay to show the importance of ethnology, and especially of recent developments of that science, to history. During the last ten years there has been in progress, rudely hindered but not stopped by the war, a movement which has brought the two disciplines into much closer relationship than would have been possible: under the conditions which guided the study of ethnology twenty or thirty years ago. At this more remote period anthropology - I use the term anthropology advisedly - was wholly under the dominance of a crude evolutionary standpoint. The aim of the anthropologist was to work out a schema of human progress according to which language, social organisation, religion, and material arts had developed through the action of certain principles or laws. It was assumed that the manifold peoples of the earth represented stages in this process of evolution, and it was supposed that by the comparative study of the culture of these different peoples it would be possible to formulate the laws by which the process of evolution had been directed and governed.
