Very few factories can depend entirely on daylight. In a room lit by only a single window, the natural light will be inadequate for most visual tasks at distances from the window greater than 1 1/2 times the height of the window above the work plane. In some cases, where the windows are little more than vision strips, illumination on the work has to be almost entirely artificial. Even so, working conditions can be made satisfactory through proper attention to control of glare, provision of adequate upward light to the ceiling or underside of the roof and use of light-reflecting finishes on the main interior surfaces. All these are just as important as the illuminance. When complaints about lighting arise in factories, the cause is seldom insufficient light; more likely that the installation fails to comply with the recommendations of Australian Standards 1680.1--1990 Interior lighting Part 1: General principles and recommendations, and 1680.2.0--1990 Interior lighting Part 2.0: Recommendations for specific tasks and interiors.
