Excerpt from How to Run a Little Sunday School When we realize, moreover, what our country and the world owe to these same little Sunday schools, and what our city churches have received from them in well started religious life, is it not our common shame that the call of the little Sunday school for adequate educational leadership should for so long have gone practically unheeded? Excerpt from How to Conduct a Sunday-School To some the book may seem too simple, to others too complicated; but this will depend somewhat upon the reader's view-point. To the experienced Sunday - school worker it may seem too elementary, but to the beginner, for whom it is primarily intended, it will doubt less seem sufficiently advanced. There is a certain satisfaction in working out things for one's self. I have, therefore, presented the subject of this book in princi ples, leaving the reader to apply them and to get results for himself. Excerpt from Childhood's Morning: For Kindergarten Use in Sunday School and Home Why, how does this happen? Hasn't each one two hands? Or, has some one three? Let us count again. How many children are there? Yes, ten Then some one has only one hand. All two hands? Well, did you all hold up your two hands? Ah, no! Henry held up only one; this accounts for it. So there are really twenty hands in the room, twice as many as there are children; and if you count my two, then there will be how many? Yes, two more than twenty, - twenty-two. Just look at your hands. What wonderful things they are! How soft and tender and warm [here pass around, taking some of the little hands in your own What beautiful nails with the little white half-moon at the bottom! Are the nails of any use? Yes; they protect the fingers which have to do very hard work. If there were no nails at the ends how many hard knocks and sharp cuts the tender esh would get! Bend your finger slowly, one finger at a time, very slowly; now shut the hand; now Open it and see what a curious thing it is. What can this little hand do? Think of something. Yes, it can use a knife, it can write with a pencil or piece Of chalk, it can paint beautiful pictures, it can use a hammer, it sews with a fine needle and makes such even little stitches And when it is larger and stronger, like a man's, it may build huge engines and high bridges and great mills and the tall church spires; or it may run over the keys of the piano so nimbly that you can hardly see the fingers as they y. But does the little hand ever do wrong? Can you think of any wrong things it does? Yes, sometimes it strikes sometimes it takes things which do not belong to it; sometimes it is very unclean. Could your dear little hand do these things? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from One Year of Sunday School Lessons for Young Children: A Manual for Teachers and Parents, Presenting a Series of Sunday School Lessons Selected, Arranged, and Adapted for the Use of the Youngest Classes The old axiom, two bodies cannot occupy the same space at the same time, is true in the physical world 5 but in the mental world, she who is to touch the life of a child must put herself in his place - must see from his point of view. For the time her mode of thinking, the mode of the mature mind, must be set aside. She is to think along the same channel with the mind of the child, whose life can be measured in months - she is to understand as a child. Linguists tell us they think in a foreign language. The task of the linguist is precisely the task of the teacher. She must study the child's language until she can think in it. In other words, she must discover his mode of thought. Excerpt from Ten Lessons in Sunday-School Science: A Manual for the Use of Normal Classes This little book is designed to help Sunday-school teachers who, feeling the need of aid along lines of study lying outside of the text-book which they teach, but which are no less necessary to be followed, are willing to put forth definite and systematic efforts in the direction Whither they lead. Briefly these lines of study lead to questions concerning the Sunday school itself as an institution, the scholar as an immor tal being with a destiny dependent upon character, the teacher as circumscribed and limited by the nature both of the school and (f the scholar, and the work it self, as conditioned upon certain fixed-laws, and aided by certain necessary adjuncts. Most of the matter which is here presented is doubtless not new. Its form, however, is new, and is the result of many years of teaching and of study in both secular and Sunday schools. For convenience' sake, the topics discussed have been arranged in ten lessons, with the thought that they would thus serve' for ten consecutive morn ing or afternoon sessions at any of our Sunday-school assemblies. A synopsis of'each lesson precedes the lesson itself. It is suggested that all students should thoroughly master these synopses, if not by actual memorizing, by Some other equivalent process. In.
