Newtonian mechanics is a cornerstone topic in physics. Regardless of the path an aspiring physicist takes, an intimate and intuitive understanding of how objects behave within Newton's law of motion is essential.Yet the transition from high school physics to university level physics can be — and should be — difficult. The aim of this book is to teach Newtonian mechanics suitable for the first two years of university study. Using carefully chosen and detailed examples to expose areas of frequent misunderstanding, the first two thirds of the book introduces material familiar to high school students from the ground up, with a more mature point of view. The final third of the book contains new material, introducing detailed sections on the rotation of rigid objects and providing an insight into subtleties that can be troubling to the first-time learner. Tabletop physics demonstrations are suggested to assist in understanding the worked examples. As a teacher and lecturer of physics with experience at both high school and university level, Professor Vijay Tymms offers a lucid and sensitive presentation of Newtonian mechanics to help make the step from high school to university as smooth as possible.

Quantum Field Theory Physics explained from a mass quantum collision theory and quantized photon collision theory perspective. Introduces the concept of discontinuous, discreet, free-state and bound-state quantum mass and photon quantum perspectives as applied to Quantum Field Theory continuous group theory mathematics. Provides a brief introduction to Quantum Field Theory wave packet, gauge, group and tensor mathematics from a discreet, discontinuous, quantized collision theory mathematics perspective and implications to the Standard Model. Note: This book is an incomplete and evolving research manuscript which will correct syntax and errors in logic as they are discovered or validated by experiment in future theoretical investigations. Version 5.0 adds a discussion for why we need to extend Quantum Field Theory and proposes a mass quantum particle collision solution explaining contradictory experimental evidence why an accelerated electron radiates photon energy in a photon field but does not radiate photon energy in an accelerated gravitational field. Version 4.0 includes cosmology expansion equations for understanding particle freeze-out timelines and a more detailed description of QED U(1) derivations (excluding re-normalization details) and minor corrections to QCD SU(3) formulations. Version 3.0 includes a description of a quantized Gauss's Law relation to Super-String/Loop theory and equivalent representation by Planck scale and below collision theory as an action proportional to surface area. Version 2.0 includes minor spelling and syntax corrections and inclusion of a glossary. Version 5.0 will provide more rigorous mathematics as quantum field derivations and gravity derivations are explored in the companion books, "How to Succeed at Understanding Quantum Gravity" and "How to Succeed at Understanding Newtonian Physics" M. Version 9.0 adds (9) professional papers submitted to the APS Physics Review D as regular papers explaining how dark matter, dark energy, gravity, the LIGOS experimental results, and explaining General Relativity and Special Relativity at the sub-Planck size scale. It adds an introductory argument for why wave packet theory and GR is only an approximation to baryogenesis and formation of other particles of the standard model. A better sub-Planck scale theory is the (CAE) theory presented to describe a particle-based gravity theory currently ignored and unexplored by mainstream gravity wave physicists and black hole physicists unwilling to abandon GR for a version more accurately modeling quantum particle behaviors in empty space. Version 8.0 updates concepts of composite picture images of interference patterns and corrects some syntax errors. It adds discussion of "reality" and "locality" loopholes in Bell's inequality theorems and points out the problem is a problem of "simultaneous realism" with the human reference frame definition of "simultaneous", rather than a particle reference frame definition of "simultaneous" in a local-space only collision. All physics is local while remote observations can create "illusions" and "distortions" of this local space particle collision reality. Version 7.0 corrects a mistake in describing curved motion of free space photons as the magnetic field. What is curved is the field lines. Motion of the photons between electrons is direct between photon emission and absorption paths. The collision interactions cause the electrons and thus the molecules to arrange in curved paths (field lines) described by Gauss's Law and Quantum Field theory derivations. Includes a Planck scale derivation for Gauss's Law. There is very little difference between version 7.0 and version 6.0. Version 6.0 changes to a smaller formatted book and adds discussion about dark energy, dark matter cosmology implications for fundamental physics particle searches (neutralinos, axions, wimpzillas, etc.). Version 5.0 reduces redundancy and shortens the book for greater clarity and reduced price. Version 4.0 explains the meaning of "instantaneous" and "simultaneous" events and why the collapse of a wave packet or human scale measurements are never "instantaneous". Redefines Newton/Leibniz differential and integral mathematics to quantized, discreet, discontinuous mathematics having finite limits rather than approach zeroes and infinities. Contains explanations for why "reality" was debated between Neils Bohr and Einstein with detailed explanations for why quantum wave-duality is not a realistic description of nature at the Planck size scale and below. Includes glossary terms for matrix mechanics mathematics of Heisenberg and explanation of why quantum scale collisions commute when space is scaled to local events, [P][Q]-[Q][P] >h/2pi is a global frame "illusion", when changing frames of reference and considering speed of light, opposite energy and forces commute at the Planck scale particle's local frame only [P][Q]-[-Q][P] = 0. Version 3.0 acknowledges credit to gravity collision theory discoveries of Fatio and LaSage. Version 2.0 makes additional syntax changes and clarifies specific concepts in more detail than version 1.0 Alternative Interpretation of E=hv, electron-photon capture, existence threshold and interaction principles which do not violate any current experimental evidence. Attempts to explain existence theorem, energy-mass interaction, gravity concept and what happens to a photon after absorption and before radiation. Version 1.0 is now an original work limited edition distribution copy of "Alternative Physics" as distribution channels for version 1.0 are soon disabled. Those lucky few individuals who have a copy of version 1.0 now possess a rare and limited "original work" first published on Oct 17, 2012 which the author is willing to sign and stamp at some future book signing opportunity.

In the second edition, a number of misprints that appeared in the first edition have been corrected. In addition to this, we have made improvements based on the experience gathered in the use of the first English edition of the book in the introductory course in physics at the University of Copenhagen. A chapter introducing nonlinear dynamics has been added. The purpose of this chapter is to provide supplementary reading for the students who are interested in this area of active research, where Newtonian mechanics plays an essential role. The students who wish to dig deeper, should consult texts dedicated to the study of nonlinear dynamical systems and chaos. The literature list at the end of this book contains several references for the topic. The book still contains a one-semester (15 weeks) first university course on Newtonian mechanics. This necessarily introduces some constraints on the choice of topics and the level of mathematical sophistication expected from the reader. If one looks for discussions of technical issues, such as the physics behind various manifestations of friction, or the tensorial nature of the rotation vector, one will look in vain. The book contains what we feel are the essential aspects of Newtonian Mechanics. It is a pleasure again to thank Springer-Verlag and in particular Dr. H. J. KOisch and the staff at the Heidelberg office for helpfulness and professional collaboration.

From Newton to Einstein is a book devoted to classical mechanics. "Classical" here includes the theory of special relativity as well because, as argued in the book, it is essentially Newtonian mechanics extended to very high speeds. This information is expanded from the author's popular Q&A website, a site aimed primarily at general readers who are curious about how physics explains the workings of the world. Hence, the answers emphasize concepts over formalism, and the mathematics is kept to a minimum. Students new to physics will find discussion and quantitative calculations for areas often neglected in introductory courses (e.g. air drag and non-inertial frames). The author gives us a more intuitive approach to special relativity than normally taught in introductory courses. One chapter discusses general relativity in a completely non-mathematical way emphasizing the equivalence principle and the generalized principle of relativity; the examples in this chapter can offer a new slant on applications of classical mechanics. Another chapter is devoted to the physics of computer games, sci-fi, superheros, and super weapons for those interested in the intersection of popular culture and science. Professional scientists will find topics that they may find amusing and, in some cases, everyday applications that they had not thought of. Brief tutorials are given for essential concepts (e.g. Newton's laws) and appendices give technical details for the interested reader.

One could make the claim that all branches of physics are basically generalizations of classical mechanics. It is also often the first course which is taught to physics students. The approach of this book is to construct an intermediate discipline between general courses of physics and analytical mechanics, using more sophisticated mathematical tools. The aim of this book is to prepare a self-consistent and compact text that is very useful for teachers as well as for independent study.
