Excerpt from Lippincott's Silent Reading for Beginners This book has been prepared to meet the demand for a Silent Reader which can be placed in the hands of little children. While material for such a book should develop the several abilities requisite for the study of books, the material supplied must necessarily be adapted to the age level of the child. The lessons used here are not all informational in char acter although each lesson is planned so that the central thought is of worth. Simple narratives are introduced to provide a basis for development of comprehension of material read for pleasure. They also provide an interesting means for the inculcation of civic consciousness and the child's relation to civic needs. Lessons in thrift, fire prevention, first aid, civics, health, etc., are given orally in all schools then the child is sent to his seat to read material far removed from such every day duties. In this book he will find those ideas presented for thought and emphasis, while a means is provided for a check ing-up of his ability to comprehend. Excerpt from Silent Reading: With Special Reference to Methods, for Developing Speed, a Study in the Psychology and Pedagogy of Reading The processes and purposes involved in silent reading have lately been subjected to searching analysis. The former are revealed as both physiological and psychological, the latter as both complex and various. Each has its lessons for the guidance of the teacher; and each exalts the importance of reading as a school subject. Reading processes on their psychological side are essentially associative - associative of impressions with meanings and of meanings with each other. In the latter sense they are frequently identified with study. Indeed, silent reading of the reflective type differs in no practical sense from study. The fact that in study we repeat and recapitulate adds but little of a qualitative nature to the reading act. Processes on the physiological side consist in large part of eye-movements. The number, length, groupings, and progressive or recessive character of these movements are at once symptoms and conditions of reading efficiency. Moreover, they take place according to patterns which are peculiar to each individual, being the product of original nature and of practice. The Silent Reading Hour written by Guy Thomas Buswell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1927 with Children's poetry categories.

Silent reading is not merely non-vocal reading--it is the complex process of getting thought from the printed page. The chief aim of the primary grades is to develop the habit of reading rapidly and easily large amounts of narrative material. This series of readers presents one method to encourage and improve silent reading, as detailed in the lesson plans of the teachers manual. By the time a child reaches the third reader, he should begin to extract the meaning of new words from context, without assistance. The content deals with real life situations children encounter, fact based stories to develop constructive thinking, lengthier stories to promote interest and familiarity with characters, all assisted by typographic design to inspire the rhythmic eye-movement required for adult reading.
