As a novelist, memoirist, and associate director of the New York State Summer Writers Institute, Amy Wallen has a few things to say about the writing world, many of them irreverent and snarky. From her perspective as a teacher, mentor, and published author, her belief is that the way to survive the hard knocks of writing a book and trying to get published is to bust a gut working, laughing, and eating pie. With chapters including "Oh Agent, Where Art Thou?", "Revising, Rewriting, and Reimagining," and "The Joy of Rejection," Wallen balances out the challenging stages of the writing process with both sweet and savory goodness, featuring recipes for chocolate pecan pie, salmon and portobello pie, and the recipe for the best cherry pie ever. Throughout the book, Wallen demystifies the vagaries of the publishing business, providing delicious recipes that will keep your belly full even when you're staring at an empty page. Her writing advice is neatly paired with the brilliant illustrations of Emil Wilson, who shares her sharp wit, sardonic look at the demands of the writing life, and her mad love of pie. Combined, the stories, lessons, images, and recipes will provide encouragement and camaraderie for the novel-writing journey, from putting pen to page, to finding an agent, to celebrating publication—all with a piece of pie.

Writing and publishing your first novel is tough. It usually takes a long time. Years for most people. It can be soul destroying too. You finally complete your manuscript; you send off samples to agents and publishers, and anxiously watch the mail for the responses. Then they come in, one at a time, rejection after rejection. How do I know this? I've been there. Does this mean I was a bad writer? No, but I could have used some help in those early days. Sure, I had purchased a few books on writing and I had tried to pay attention to the advice they gave, but there were so many of them and sometimes advice seemed to conflict other advice. It was way too much to take in. But I persevered with my writing and now I have been writing for several years and I have completed several novels and other books, and my writing is a lot better. My early novels could still do with some major re-editing (which they will be finally getting this summer), but my later works, oh wow I can spot the differences! So, a few months ago I decided I would go the self-publishing route to getting my books out there in the big world. Things are changing in the book markets and so many people now have Kindles and Nooks and iPads and other electronic book readers. I thought to myself, why not do it myself? I know I can write; I have that confidence. Enough complete strangers have told me they like what I write, so why shouldn't I join that list of published authors? And why should I have to wait for some agent or publisher to take a chance on an unknown author before I get published? So I did it, and now I have the story to tell and the method you can use to generate your own success. This ebook is a series of essays solely concerned with improving your writing skills and getting your first novel successfully self-published. It is written in a way that you can keep dipping into it, and keep coming back to parts of it, time and time again. It is concise and to the point and it is written from experience; thousands of hours of experience. Every essay in this book is relevant and has a purpose. Every essay will give you pause for thought. Can I turn you into a bestselling author? No - only you can do that. But I can set you on a path to success. I can give you clear guidelines about what not to do, and how to do things better. And I can tell you exactly how to self-publish that novel. This ebook takes your novel from the beginning and leads you along a path of self-discovery. When you have finished reading you will be Writing for Success and be someone who has a better chance than most every other wannabe author out there of becoming the next Tom Clancy, JK Rowling, Stephen King, or whoever else is your writing hero. When We Were Ghouls written by Amy E. Wallen and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

When Amy E. Wallen's southern, blue-collar, peripatetic family was transferred from Ely, Nevada, to Lagos, Nigeria, she had just turned seven. From Nevada to Nigeria and on to Peru, Bolivia, and Oklahoma, the family wandered the world, living in a state of constant upheaval. When We Were Ghouls follows Wallen's recollections of her family who, like ghosts, came and went and slipped through her fingers, rendering her memories unclear. Were they a family of grave robbers, as her memory of the pillaging of a pre-Incan grave site indicates? Are they, as the author's mother posits, "hideous people?" Or is Wallen's memory out of focus? In this quick-paced and riveting narrative, Wallen exorcizes these haunted memories to clarify the nature of her family and, by extension, her own character. Plumbing the slipperiness of memory and confronting what it means to be a "good" human, When We Were Ghouls links the fear of loss and mortality to childhood ideas of permanence. It is a story about family, surely, but it is also a representation of how a combination of innocence and denial can cause us to neglect our most precious earthly treasures: not just our children but the artifacts of humanity and humanity itself.

When Your Heart Says Go written by Judy Reeves and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-10 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

What sort of mad longing besets a woman—nearing fifty and recently widowed—to sell everything she owns, buy an around-the-world airline ticket, pack a single suitcase, and set off alone on a year-long journey without a plan or agenda? When Your Heart Says Go answers that question. Set in 1990–’91, Judy’s story takes readers from San Diego through eleven European countries, the then-Soviet Union, and finally India, during the lead-up to the first Gulf War. Explorations of foreign locales and interactions with strangers and acquaintances who become a lifeline to friendship are interspersed with occasional flashbacks to Judy’s life with her beloved husband, Tom, as well as his illness and death. Descriptions of sites historic and current serve as both daily life and background for Judy’s struggle to find her way as a sober, single, independent woman in the vast world as it edges toward the collapse of the Soviet Union and war in the Middle East. The outer journey serves as a container for the inner; the more Judy experiences of the world, the more she learns about herself—and the closer she gets to realizing her lifelong dream of being a writer.

I want to write a book. Where do I start? Are you thinking of writing a novel or a nonfiction book but aren't sure where to begin? Perhaps you've heard of the Snowflake Method, the 30-Day Method, the 5-Draft Method, outlining, plotters and pantsers, but are just having trouble fitting writing into your life. This is the writing guide to get you going! Maybe you've already started a book - once, twice, several times - yet somehow drifted away, lost focus, lost momentum, and ended up dumping your manuscript in the too-hard basket. This is the writing guide to get you back on track! 12 simple steps to becoming an author Divided into three easy stages, How to Write a Book has 12 simple steps that take you through the process of writing from start to finish. Part 1: Getting Started explores the tricks of the mind that stand in the way of a would-be writer. From finding the time, to dealing with distractions, battling Resistance, what to do when your mind's a blank, and even writing with a tomato! Part 2: Keeping Going. Most novels are abandoned one-third of the way in. Find out why. And find out what you can do when you hit The Wall, strike writer's block, or are trapped in the tyranny of constant changes. Part 3: Letting Go. The tricks of the mind don't stop once you type THE END. This part looks at the quest for perfection (and how to handle it), dealing with rejections, and what to do once you think you're done. Bonus chapter A special bonus chapter deals with what you should write, the business of writing, being a guinea pig, doing a Nanowrimo ("write a novel in a month"), the three Ps (Practice, Productivity and Professionalism), and what being a successful writer really means. Write the novel you've always dreamed of writing. Start today! Excerpt from the Introduction On 1 September 1995, Jim Grant sat down to write. He'd never written a novel before and, having just been made redundant from his job at Granada Television, reckoned he'd have to earn himself a laptop. So he went out and bought three pads of paper, a pencil, a pencil-sharpener and an eraser, investing the princely sum of £3.99 in his new vocation. Then settled down to work. Long-hand. The book he wrote - called Killing Floor - earned Grant a laptop all right, and a great deal more. It, and his subsequent books, have regularly topped the bestseller charts for the last twenty years. But you probably don't recognise his name. That's because Grant writes under the pseudonym Lee Child. My aim in opening with that story wasn't to add to the mythology of Jim Grant/Lee Child, or to help him sell more books. (He seems to be doing okay without my assistance.) What I wanted to emphasise was the writer's basic tools: pads of paper a pencil a pencil-sharpener an eraser That, really, is all you need. And it's all writers have needed for centuries. You don't need a new laptop with terabytes of disk space and monitor large enough to be seen from the Moon. All you need is £3.99's worth of supplies. (About $5 in the US.) If you have a typewriter, great. A computer's even better. But neither of those things are essential. All you really need is some method of recording your thoughts. A pencil and paper work fine. Just ask Lee Child.

This concise guide tells you how to write a novel by using a systematic approach to writing. This guide is written by an author not a 'guru'. A simple step by step breakdown of how to plan each day. No fillers and no theory, just the hard facts in a concise guide. There are many guides about writing novels on the market but how many of them are written by prolific published authors? The answer is ‘not many'. How can anyone write a guide unless they have been through the writing process many times before? The simple answer to this question is they can't because they cannot feed on their own actual experiences to help another writer to avoid the mistakes and pitfalls. Most guides regurgitate information which they have picked up from creative writing books or sites. How can they give you advice when they have never sat down and focused on creating a novel which will sell, many times over? Writing a novel is the same as any other task we undertake as individuals. We have to learn how to do it in order to do it well. When you first learn to drive, you need lessons. No one walks into the kitchen and creates a gourmet dish on their first attempt. If you want a system to apply to writing a book, then you need to take advice from an ‘author’ who has taken years to develop the process via experience.
