During the last decade facilities for treating patients with end-stage renal failure have expanded in all Westernized countries. Partly as a consequence, interest has been stimulated in many multisystem dis eases which may progress to chronic renal failure. Some of these diseases such as diabetes mellitus are common but still have con troversial aspects to their investigation and management. Others such as lupus nephritis are relatively rare but respond well to recent advances in therapy. In addition to diabetes mellitus and lupus nephritis this volume has chapters on multiple myeloma and Henoch-Schonlein purpura. All the chapters have been written by ackl10wiedged experts who have emphasized the practical aspects of patient management. The infor mation contained in this volume should thus prove of interest not only to nephrologists but to all practising clinicians. VII ABOUT THE EDITOR Professor Graeme R.D. Catto is Professor in Medicine and Thera peutics at the University of Aberdeen and Honorary Consultant Physician/Nephrologist to the Grampian Health Board. His current interest in transplant immunology was stimulated as a Harkness Fellow at Harvard Medical School and the Peter Bent Brighton Hos pital, Boston, USA. The past few years have witnessed the emergence of steroid hormones as the wonder molecules which generate as much discussion in the scientific literature as they do in a typical living room. This transition has been a result of the tremendous public and scientific interest in the normal functioning of the hor mones as well their suggested involvement in several clinical conditions. In the recent past, notable scientific and technological advances have been made in the areas of contraception and regulation of fertility. Steroid receptors are the indis pensable mediators of hormonal responses and are complex protein molecules which appear to exist in association with other, yet undefined, proteins and/or factors. Receptors for vitamin D, retinoic acid and the thyroid hormones share structural similarities with steroid receptors, and the roster of this superfamily is still expanding. While our knowledge of the diversity and magnitude of steroid effects has advanced, the precise mode of steroid hormone action has alluded investigators. This volume brings together an international team of prominent investigators who discuss their most recent work on the basic and clinical aspects of steroid/nuclear receptors. The contributions represent updated versions of the invited presentations made at The Second Meadow Brook Conference on Steroid Receptors in Health and Disease. Charles Hansen began his work with solvents in 1962, and almost immediately began producing new and groundbreaking results. Since then, his Hansen Solubility Parameters have been extensively used and proven valuable to a variety of industries, including coatings, adhesives, plastics, protective clothing, and environmental protection. They allow correlations and systematic comparisons previously not possible, such as polymer solubility, swelling and permeation, surface wetting and dewetting, the solubility of organic salts, and many biological applications. Until now, however, their seemingly universal ability to predict molecular affinities has been generally taken as semiempirical. Moving beyond the Hildebrand and Flory theories, Hansen found that his approach not only quantitatively describes hydrogen bonding and polar bonding in many types of systems, but in fact agrees with and extends the very general Prigogine theory. This explains why the correlations all seem to fit with an apparently "universal" 4: it results from the validity of applying the geometric mean rule to describe dispersion, permanent dipole-permanent dipole, and hydrogen bonding interaction in mixtures of unlike molecules. Hansen Solubility Parameters provides new tables of previously unpublished correlations and parameters. The author illuminates his text with practical examples related to coatings, biological systems, pigments, and fibers, and takes a general approach that makes this reference ideal for predicting compatibility, adsorption on surfaces, orientation toward materials of similar affinities (self-assembly), and other phenomena associated with solubility and affinity. The workshop "Genes and their products for tolerance to physical stresses in plants" was held in Maratea, Italy, from 24-27 September 1995. As one of a series of activity launched by the European Science Foundation (ESF) Network "Cell Stress Genes and their Protein Products", the workshop was the only one entirely devoted to research in the plant field. Around one hundred participants from fourteen different countries enjoyed a lively meeting in an atmosphere of sunny Mediterranean weather. A total of twenty-eight speakers from universities and research institutes were invited to present the most recent results of their research. The workshop was divided into eight sessions, namely heat, cold, salt, drought, oxidative stress, light stress, a conclusive session for recommendations and a poster session. The results reported in this workshop broadly showed the rapid progress made in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying basic aspects of the plant response to environmental stresses.
