Het gaat om een beknopte vermelding van die therapievormen waarvan enige effectiviteit bij de bedoelde stoornis is aangetoond ('evidence–based'). Prognose: Hier wordt kort besproken wat er bekend is over het verloop van de stoornis en op welke wijze preventie de evolutie van het beeld kan beïnvloeden. Literatuur: Bij elk hoofdstuk hoort een afzonderlijke lijst met de belangrijkste referenties. Aan de auteurs werd gevraagd niet elke uitspraak met een literatuurbron te staven, maar zo veel mogelijk te verwijzen naar gezaghebbende overzichtspublicaties. Dit deel van het handboek bevat dus op gesystematiseerde wijze de 'basisbegrippen' van de psychopathologie, terwijl deel 2 over de 'klinische praktijk' meer concreet ingaat op diagnostiek en behandeling.
