Inspelend op hun vraag naar goede didactische toegankelijkheid zijn talrijke schema's, diagrammen en samenvattende tabellen aan elk hoofdstuk toegevoegd.Als raamwerk bespreekt het eerste hoofdstuk de basisbegrippen, principes en knelpunten van de psychopathologie als wetenschappelijke discipline. De daarop volgende hoofdstukken zijn geordend volgens de belangrijkste categorieën van psychiatrische stoornissen, achtereenvolgens bij volwassenen en bij kinderen en adolescenten. Als eenvormige 'taal' voor indeling en beschrijving van psychiatrische stoornissen hebben de auteurs zich gebaseerd op de vierde editie van de Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, de DSM–IV.Elk hoofdstuk is volgens een vast stramien opgebouwd: kenmerken en voorkomen, wetenschappelijke inzichten, behandeling, prognose en literatuur.Kenmerken en voorkomen: Deze paragraaf omvat een beschrijving van de psychische stoornis volgens DSM–IV (met telkens een voorbeeld) en een bespreking van specifieke differentieel–diagnostische problemen. Verder wordt aan de hand van beschikbare epidemiologische gegevens een beeld geschetst van het voorkomen van de stoornis in de algemene bevolking en in de psychiatrische populatie. Wetenschappelijke inzichten: In deze paragraaf worden de verklaringen van elke stoornis besproken zoals die actueel bekend zijn op grond van empirisch materiaal. In plaats van theoretische speculaties wordt gerefereerd aan de belangrijkste studies met betrekking tot biopsychosociale verklaringen of opvattingen. Behandeling: Deze paragraaf blijft beperkt tot specifieke informatie over therapiemogelijkheden voor zover deze gesteund zijn op onderzoeksgegevens. Het gaat om een beknopte vermelding van die therapievormen waarvan enige effectiviteit bij de bedoelde stoornis is aangetoond ('evidence–based'). Prognose: Hier wordt kort besproken wat er bekend is over het verloop van de stoornis en op welke wijze preventie de evolutie van het beeld kan beïnvloeden. Literatuur: Bij elk hoofdstuk hoort een afzonderlijke lijst met de belangrijkste referenties. Aan de auteurs werd gevraagd niet elke uitspraak met een literatuurbron te staven, maar zo veel mogelijk te verwijzen naar gezaghebbende overzichtspublicaties. Dit deel van het handboek bevat dus op gesystematiseerde wijze de 'basisbegrippen' van de psychopathologie, terwijl deel 2 over de 'klinische praktijk' meer concreet ingaat op diagnostiek en behandeling.

The major purpose of this handbook is to provide a comprehensive review of current clinical descriptions, research, and theories of psychopathology. Descrip tive psychopathology is a field that is the foundation of clinical practice and re search in clinical psychology, psychiatry, psychiatric social work, psychiatric nursing, and allied professions in mental health. Psychopathology is often per ceived as "a stepchild" of the more glamorous areas of diagnosis or assessment and therapy or behavioral change. Nevertheless, it is doubtful that any meaningful advancements in these areas will occur until there is a thorough understanding of the behavioral disorders. The purpose of the present project was to devise a handbook that covered both general and specific topics in psychopathology and that would be useful to re searchers, practitioners, and graduate or other advanced students in the mental health professions. In order to implement this plan, we selected very carefully colleagues whom we respect for their expertise in particular fields. These include both clinicians and researchers with outstanding national reputations, as well as more junior behavioral scientists and clinicians who, in our opinion, will achieve similar recognition in the future.
