Since its headline-making debut, the Human Development Report has become an essential resource for development specialists, economists, and political scientists around the world. The 1992 Report not only updates the findings of the earlier volumes, but also examines the international dimensions of human development, showing how global economic growth and the expansion of the world economy have filtered down to poor economies and poor people in developing countries. In addition, it examines tcpks between human development and international markets for products, capital, and labor, addresses issues of global governance, and presents updated human development indicators for more than 160 countries.

Migration, both behind and beyond borders, has become an increasingly prominent issue in domestic and international debates. The HDR09 proposes to address this theme, exploring how the movement of people can expand human capabilities and entitlements, and how to address the underlying inequalities and distortions which limit the potential gains.

For many people around the world moving away from their home town or village can be the best – sometimes the only – option open to improve their life chances. The report explores how better policies towards mobility can enhance human development. It traces the contours of human movement – who moves where, when and why, and argues for practical measures that can improve prospects on arrival, which in turn will have large benefits both for destination communities and for places of origin. The report fixes human development firmly on the agenda of policy makers who seek the best outcomes from increasingly complex patterns of human movement worldwide.

Advancing Human Development written by Frances Stewart and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-17 with Business & Economics categories.

Human Development has been advocated as the prime development goal since 1990, when the publication of the first UNDP Human Development Report proposed that development should improve the lives people lead in multiple dimensions instead of primarily pursuing economic growth. This approach forms the foundation of Advancing Human Development: Theory and Practice. It traces the evolution of approaches to development, showing how the Human Development approach emerged as a consequence of defects in earlier strategies. Advancing Human Development argues that Human Development is superior to measures of societal happiness. It investigates the determinants of success and failure in Human Development across countries over the past forty years, taking a multidimensional approach to point to the importance of social institutions and social capabilities as essential aspects of change. It analyses political conditions underlying the performance of Human Development, and surveys global progress in multiple dimensions such as life expectancy, infant mortality, and education and outcomes, whilst reflecting on dimensions which have worsened over time, such as rising inequality and declining environmental conditions. These deteriorating conditions inform Advancing Human Development's account of the challenges to the Human Development approach, covering the insufficient attention paid to macroeconomic conditions and the economic structure needed for sustained success.

Human Development In An Unequal World written by K. Seeta Prabhu and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-04 with Business & Economics categories.

Human Development in an Unequal World deals with the twenty-first-century challenges of unstable economic growth and sustainability and the re-emergence of deprivations and inequalities in multiple realms. It argues that the broader perspective of human development is most suited in reorienting development towards a more equitable, sustainable, and empowering world. The authors discuss the concept and philosophy of the capabilities and human development approach, its measurement, the links between economic growth and human development, and the role of social sector policy, gender equality, and securing sustainability. In doing so, they analyse frameworks, processes, institutions, and actors, and weave together concepts, methods, and evidence from numerous developing countries. The chapters offer an integrated understanding of the importance of capabilities, freedoms, and human flourishing in the process of development. This volume calls for an approach that focuses on the humanness of development and brings people back to the centre stage—a phenomenon that has receded to the background in the neoliberal era.

This 1994 Human Development Report focuses on human security in the daily lives of people. Discussion focuses on some potential early warning signals and prevention actions for avoiding crisis situations. A new paradigm for international cooperation is presented as well as a concrete agenda for the World Summit on Social Development that is scheduled for March 1995. It is argued that the peace agenda and the development agenda must be strengthened and integrated by the UN. The UN Development Program needs to be strengthened and restructured, in order to make a critical contribution to sustainable development. This report is the product of an analysis by a UNDP team under the direction of Mahbub ul Haq. Chapters are devoted to the issues of sustainable human development, human security, the peace dividend, development cooperation, and the Human Development Index. Numerous tables, charts, and figures accompany the text. Special brief inserts on selected topics are prepared by the following Nobel Prize winners: Rigoberta Menchu on indigenous people, Oscar Arias on global demilitarization funding, Abdus Salam on the proposed Islamic Science Foundation, and Jan Tinbergen on global governance. It is noted by the authors of this report that humanity has progressed over the past 50 years in a number of important ways. For example, most nations have achieved freedom and the UN grew from 51 countries to 184. The world is safer from nuclear holocaust. Developing countries advanced faster than developed countries in reducing mortality, increasing life expectancy, and increasing education and nutrition. Fairly satisfactory human development levels have been reached in 60% of countries. The proportion of people living in very poor human conditions has declined from 70% of world population to 32%. Nations have increased their wealth, and military spending has declined.

The Dynamics Of Human Development written by Atanu Sengupta and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-20 with Business & Economics categories.

This book studies the dynamic aspects of the Human Development Index (HDI) through a partial mobility perspective. It offers a new axiomatic structure and a set of mobility indices to discuss partial trends and interrogate the human development status at the subgroup and subregional levels. While traditional human development theories are primarily concerned with static distributions corresponding to a point in time, this book looks at an oft-neglected side of HDI and focuses on relative changes in human development that may not be captured by the absolutist framework. In addition, the authors also introduce the concepts of jump and fractional mobility which aid in tracking the development and stagnation among various groups within a population. This work breaks fresh ground in the study of human development. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of economics, development economics, political economy, and development practitioners.
