El 19 de diciembre de 1875 se estrenó Amor con amor se paga. Esta es una obra ligera, de versificación sonora, que trata el tema amoroso con cierto humor y gracia. La obra, escrita por José Martí para la actriz Concha Padilla durante su exilio en París, obtuvo la ovación de la crítica. Los protagonistas de la historia son Julián y Leonor, quienes se disponen a representar una obra a partir de un proverbio. La obra se desarrolla como si fuese un ensayo. Luego, como si la puesta escena hubiese terminado él declara su amor y ella le corresponde. No es el idilio entre los personajes, sino entre los actores. Amor con amor se paga es una comedia dentro de otra. Es decir, el teatro dentro del teatro que otros autores modernistas seguirán utilizando en busca de una nueva expresión teatral. El conflicto realidad-ilusión y la estrecha unión de escenario (actores) y platea (público) son aspectos muy innovadores. En la época la norma era deleitarse con obras románticas marcadas por convenciones dramatúrgicas muy estereotipadas. Los dos personajes se alternan en el papel del director y de los actores. En este juego participa psíquicamente también el público, dejando atrás su tradicional pasividad del marco escénico.
