The FORECAST methods of analyzing and conceptually structuring electronic systems for determining practical repair information were taught to eight OGMS personnel, who use the methods to analyze the HIPAR system. Members of the HumRRO research staff advised and assisted in this effort. As a result of the analysis, a document termed The Improved Hercules HIPAR Training Supplement, lesson plans, and materials for the mockup equipment were developed. The HumRRO research staff designed the mockups and contracted for their fabrication. The FORECAST concept of troubleshooting within malfunctioning blocks was not used for the HIPAR course because there were no spare chassis. It is anticipated that this addional concept will be implemented when appropriate facilities for practice become available. The duration of the complete HIPAR course, including the FORECAST content, is 10 weeks. The course has been conducted for civilian and military supervisors and for Army repairmen with previous training and experience on the Nike-Hercules system. It had been in operation for about one and a half years at the time of writing this report. Discussions are being held at OGMS and at the U.S. Army Signal School in regard to using FORECAST methods in other repair courses. (Author).

The research presented in this report was directed primarily toward troubleshooting electronic weapon systems. Its principal findings bear upon three interconnected problems: (1) develop training content based upon a cue-response paradigm; (2) developing training and job methods and aids, such as mock-ups, substitute or obsolete equipment and block diagrams for troubleshooting; (3) planning and managing personnel, with special reference to transition training from old to new weapon systems. Results of the studies made suggest that training based on FORECAST methods of analysis produces men capable of effectively performing the job with less training time than that needed for traditional instruction in electronics maintenance. The objective of the research was to evaluate the training effectiveness of two cockpit procedures training devices, differing greatly in their physical fidelity (and, consequently, cost), in the teaching of ground cockpit procedures for a twin-engine, turboprop, fixed wing aircraft. One group of students received training in cockpit procedures in a relatively expensive, sophisticated, high-fidelity, computerized cockpit procedures trainer, while another group were trained in an inexpensive, low-fidelity mockup of the aircraft cockpit. Their subsequent performance in the actual aircraft was compared with that of a control group who received all of their procedures training in the aircraft. Results indicated that both training devices produced significant transfer of training, in terms of error and time reduction, in performance in the actual aircraft. There were no significant differences in training effectiveness of the two devices, in spite of their great differences in physical fidelity and cost. Implications for the design of procedures training devices and associated training programs are discussed. (Author).
