Hy Brasil The Metamorphosis Of An Island written by Barbara Freitag and has been published by Rodopi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with categories.

Brasil Island, better known as Hy Brasil, is a phantom island. In the fourteenth century Mediterranean mapmakers marked it on nautical charts to the west of Ireland, and its continued presence on maps over the next six hundred years inspired enterprising seafarers to sail across the Atlantic in search of it. Writers, too, fell for its lure. While English writers envisioned the island as a place of commercial and colonial interest, artists and poets in Ireland fashioned it into a fairyland of Celtic lore. This pioneering study first traces the cartographic history of Brasil Island and examines its impact on English maritime exploration and literature. It investigates the Gaelicization process that the island underwent in nineteenth century and how it became associated with St Brendan. Finally, it pursues the Brasil Island trope in modern literature, the arts and popular culture.

The year is 1591 and nineteen-year old Edward Harry sails to Ireland as secretary to the famous poet Edmund Spenser. Confident of his own talents, Edward expects to make his fortune as the English impose their rule on the embittered Irish. His life is blown off-course when an excursion in a small boat off the coast of Kinsale in County Cork leads to a landing on the fabled island of Hy Brazil, the Elven realm. All is not well in Hy Brazil. The island is riven by a savage civil war and Edward Harry and Calvagh, his Irish companion, are drawn into the very heart of the conflict. This is a beautifully-crafted tale of strange magics and one young man’s struggle to cope with an extraordinary destiny. Praise for Hy Brazil 'A vivid, unusual and intelligent fantasy in a style reminiscent of Cloud Atlas, supporting many elements of genuine folklore in a fascinating, well-characterised, historical mix. Gerald Killingworth writes about the fairyland of Hy Brazil as if he'd actually been there.' – Herbie Brennan, bestselling author of The Faerie Wars series 'From the chance-driven, incalculable Elizabethan world of Walter Raleigh and Edmund Spenser, in an Ireland promising fabulous realms beyond barely-imagined horizons, Gerald Killingworth has fashioned an engrossing fictional universe that Shakespeare would call ‘fantastical’ and I loved every moment of my voyage across it.' – Jonathan Keates, prizewinning biographer and novelist. Hy-Brazil is a collection of poems that chronicle world events, shifting scientific frontiers, and notions of subjectivity while attending to issues of form, self-referentiality and one's intertextual place in the literary canon. The book is also a love story, the poet's attempts to seduce his reader. The verse blends pop-music and mythology with other dichotomies like the military and the masochistic. The chronology of "The Janus Initiative" makes it a great bathroom book.

The Bend For Home written by Dermot Healy and has been published by Faber & Faber this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-05 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

One day, years after he's moved away from his childhood home in rural Ireland, Dermot Healy returns to care for his ailing mother. Out of the blue she hands him the forgotten diary he had kept as a fifteen-year-old. He is amazed to find the makings of the writer he has become, as well as taken aback at the changes his memory has wrought. The silhouettes who have haunted his past come back to inhabit his pages: his father, a kind policeman who plays cards and drinks stout with his cronies; his mother, whose stories young Dermot has heard so often that he believes they are his own; or Aunt Maisie, whose early disappointment in love has left her both dreamy and cynical. Funny, direct and moving, The Bend For Home is a family portrait like no other, and a hugely engaging account of a childhood in small-town Ireland.
