This volume presents treat the material science and mechanical issues of hybrid adhesive bonds which are a combination of adhesive bonding rather than mechanical fasteners. The idea of hybrid joints is to gather the advantages of the different techniques leaving out their problems. In the recent past there have been calls for transparent and filigree structures in the building industry. Therefore, glass plays an increasing role not only in a classic way, as a space enclosing element, but also more and more in terms of offering load carrying functions. Glass beams for façade elements or floor girders, glass columns, or bracing façade elements are examples of this. To realize such architecturally attractive structures, bonded hybrid steel-glass elements have been developed in which each material is used in an optimized way according to its material properties. Promising examples for such bonded structures are I-beams in which steel flanges and glass webs are connected by linear adhesive bonds. The shear force is carried by the glass web, whereas the bending capacity of the hybrid beam is significantly increased by slender steel flanges compared to the pure glass pane. The shear forces between steel and glass are sustained only by the adhesive between them. In order to maximize the exploitation of both steel and glass, the adhesive on the one hand has to ensure an adequate stiffness but on the other hand has to be flexible enough to allow for a reduction or redistribution of local stress peaks, as well as other constraints such as thermal dilatation. However, the load-bearing capacity of such beams is governed, besides by the mechanical and geometrical characteristics of the adhesive joint, by aging, temperature, and creeping. In this contribution, an approach is shown for characterizing the adhesive joints for hybrid steel-glass beams by means of simplified small-scale tests. Standardized specimens (block shear and tension bulk specimens) and small-scale push-out tests are used to derive adequate mechanical values for analytical and numerical calculations, allowing one to draw conclusions regarding the general load carrying behavior of large-scale hybrid steel-glass beams. The results show that full-scale hybrid steel-glass beams, especially those with butt splice bonded and U-bonded geometries, are feasible using new structural adhesives, predominantly elasto-plastics such as polyurethanes or epoxy resins.

In this book, some interesting technologies and applications dedicated to adhesives are presented and discussed. First, the interference fitted and adhesively bonded joints are extensively studied as an effective means to increase the transferable load while reducing both the weight and the stress level of the joined components. In such type of joints, the influence of the assembly technique on the shear strength of the joints has been investigated. Therefore, the shear strength of hybrid joints realised by 'press fitting', by 'shrink fitting' or by 'cryogenic fitting' were compared in order to suggest the best way of joining both for technological and economic importance. Then, some design aspects for practical application (for instance in the automotive steel wheel) were analysed. The adhesive and interference contributions to the resultant resistance of the hybrid joint were carried out with particular attention to the phenomena occurring at the interface. The effect of the adhesive nature, its curing technology and its mechanical response were strongly related to the type of adhesive exploited. Also, the static and fatigue strength properties of press fitted and adhesively bonded joints was studied by considering their Engagement Ratio, which is the ratio between the coupling length and the coupling diameter. Coupling and decoupling tests have been performed both on press-fitted and adhesively bonded specimens and on pin-collar samples, considering four different levels for the Engagement Ratio.

"This study investigates the properties of flexible epoxy adhesives and their applicability in the design of hybrid bolted/bonded joints. There is increasing interest in using flexible adhesives for joint design, due to their ductility that enables significant elongation before failure. Generally, the behaviour of ductile adhesive involves considerable nonlinearities including large deformation, nonlinear material properties and plasticity. Analysis of flexible adhesives is more challenging than that of stiff adhesives, which is sufficiently described by linear elasticity and infinitesimal strain theory. The present study experimentally characterizes EA9361, selected as the representative material for flexible epoxy adhesives. The tensile tests, based on ASTM D638, generate stress/strain relation and also measure the evolution of Poisson's ratio throughout the strain until failure. From the stress/strain curve of the tensile tests, distinct yielding is observed. Therefore, in order to further understand the yielding nature of the epoxy adhesive, biaxial tests are then performed using a custom-designed Arcan fixture. While the biaxial tests try to capture yield stresses at different levels of biaxial loading, sharp stress concentrations are developed in the adhesive due to the constraint effects caused by high Poisson's ratio. Consequently, the values of the measured yield stresses are severely underestimated except for the pure shear case. From the pure shear case, the shear stress/strain relation is presented. Also tested is the adhesive under tension-tension cyclic loading in order to investigate the evolution of material properties through repeated cycles of plastic deformation. The results show that the material response converges in the presence of yielding and significant viscous effects. In addition to the above material characterizations, hybrid bolted/bonded joints are tested under cyclic loading in order to simulate in-situ application of a flexible adhesive. The results of the joint testing show that, despite the complex adhesive's response due to yielding and viscous effects, proper use of flexible epoxy adhesives could help design hybrid joints that operate at higher efficiency. Additionally, a new methodology to measure adhesive strain for a very thin adhesive bondline is proposed, and the custom-designed testing and manufacturing devices are introduced." --
