Hyde Park was established in 1821 as a simple and small town on the Hudson River. Its claim to fame, however, and what attracts people still to this day, are the grand estates, lush landscapes, and lavish lifestyles of some of those who lived there. Wealthy families like the Vanderbilts, Rogerses, Roosevelts, Dinsmores, and Millses built homes to match their place in society. These estates popped up along the river during the Gilded Age. Hyde Park was a perfect location because of its easy access to New York City, where culture and society could be found, while providing country living along the Hudson for the many outdoor pleasures the wealthy enjoyed. One part of this work shows the wealthy river families, whose houses were built by prominent architects and filled with treasures from abroad. Other images show the families who worked as coachmen, gardeners, and parlor maids and made the lifestyles of the rich possible.

First founded in 1853 by New York lawyer Paul Cornell, who named the community after the famous London park, Hyde Park was incorporated in 1861 and in 1889 the village was annexed to the City of Chicago. At the time of annexation, Hyde Park was extremely large in size, extending from 39th to 138th Streets. Today the area stretches from Lake Michigan to Cottage Grove Avenue and 47th to 59th Streets. The 1890s was a time of great growth for Hyde Park. The construction of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Jackson Park had a profound and lasting effect not only on Hyde Park and the city, but on the entire country. The famous University of Chicago was founded in 1890 and was under construction simultaneously with the World's Columbian Exposition. The area grew, attracting additional businesses, people, and an expanding economy to the area.

Experience first-hand the unparalleled year-round beauty and charm of this region, spanning from the magical snowy mountaintops of the Adirondacksto the glass and steel of Manhattan. In over 200 breath-taking photographs, The Hudson River follows the course of this great natural beauty, exploring its picturesque banks, historic riverfront towns and stately old mansions, and magnificent public parks and wilderness. Paired with these images are inspired writings by 19th- and 20th-century authors such as Washington Irving and Robert Caro. The source of the mighty Hudson is a small misted pond high atop Mount March in the heart of Adirondack Park: Lake Tear of the Clouds. Flowing more than 300 miles before reaching the Atlantic Ocean, the Hudson River is truly the main artery of New York State. It has witnessed four centuries of transformation in New York, from early English and Dutch trading settlements and mansions of the Guilded Age to the skyscrapers of the world?s greatest city.
