Based on previsions, the reciprocating internal combustion engine will continue to be widely used in all sectors: transport, industry, and energy production. Therefore, its development, while complying with the limitations of pollutants as well as CO2 emission levels and maintaining or increasing performance, will certainly continue for the next few decades. In the last three decades, a significant effort has been made to reduce pollutant emission levels. More recently, attention has been given to CO2 emission levels too.It is widely recognized that one single technology will not completely solve the problem of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Rather, the different technologies already available will have to be integrated, and new technologies developed, to obtain substantial CO2 abatement.

This study analyzes the feasibility of using hydrogen as fuel in an internal combustion engine (ICE), and explores methods of increasing engine power. The current state of the hydrogen industry is discussed, including the merits and detriments of hydrogen use in internal combustion engines with respect to gasoline ICEs and hydrogen fuel cells. The properties of hydrogen and how they present unique advantages and disadvantages to the operation of ICEs is addressed. The purpose and theory of pressure boosting is discussed, and calculations are conducted regarding the performance of a chosen turbocharger and intercooler system, incorporating respective efficiencies, pressure losses and performance gains at chosen engine operating parameters. Finally, the performance gained by the designed pressure boosting system is analytically determined, and the results are compared to the naturally aspirated (unboosted) hydrogen engine and a gasoline engine. The effectiveness of pressure boosting as a means of making hydrogen a more viable ICE fuel is discussed in the context of the results.

Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE) technology takes advantage of existing knowledge of combustion engines to provide a means to power passenger vehicle with hydrogen, perhaps as an interim measure while fuel cell technology continues to mature. This project seeks to provide data to determine the reliability of these engines. Data were collected from an engine operated on a dynamometer for 1000 hours of continuous use. Data were also collected from a fleet of eight (8) full-size pickup trucks powered with hydrogen-fueled engines. In this particular application, the data show that HICE technology provided reliable service during the operating period of the project. Analyses of engine components showed little sign of wear or stress except for cylinder head valves and seats. Material analysis showed signs of hydrogen embrittlement in intake valves.

Internal combustion engines are among the most fascinating and ingenious machines which, with their invention and continuous development, have positively influenced the industrial and social history during the last century, especially by virtue of the role played as propulsion technology par excellence used in on-road private and commercial transportation. Nowadays, the growing attention towards the de-carbonization opens up new scenarios, but IC engines will continue to have a primary role in multiple sectors: automotive, marine, offroad machinery, mining, oil & gas and rail, power generation, possibly with an increasing use of non-fossil fuels. The book is organized in monothematic chapters, starting with a presentation of the general and functional characteristics of IC engines, and then dwelling on the details of the fluid exchange processes and the definition of the layout of intake and exhaust systems, obviously including the supercharging mechanisms, and continue with the description of the injection and combustion processes, to conclude with the explanation of the formation, control and reduction of pollutant emissions and radiated noise.

"In order to develop design guidelines for optimum operations of internal combustion engines fueled with alternative fuels, a comprehensive understanding combustion behavior and the pollutant formation inside the cylinder are needed. The first part of this thesis aimed to numerically study the engine performance and in-cylinder pollutant formation in a spark ignition engine fueled with hydrogen. Advanced simulations were performed using multi- dimensional software AVL FIRE coupled with CHEMKIN. The detailed chemical reactions with 29 steps of hydrogen oxidation with additional nitrogen oxidation reactions were also employed. Formation rates of nitrogen oxides (NO[subscript x]) within the engine were accurately predicted using the extended Zeldovich mechanism with parameters adjusted for a carbon-free fuel. The computational results were first validated against experimental results with different equivalence ratios and then employed to examine a spark-ignition engine fueled with hydrogen under different operating conditions. Strategies that could have significant effects on the engine performance and emissions, such as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and ignition timing were also investigated. Furthermore, the maximization of engine power and minimization of NO[subscript x] emissions were considered as conflicting objectives for preliminary optimization. Finally, a skeletal reaction mechanism was developed to include the reaction kinetics of diesel and hydrogen fuel mixtures to investigate in-cylinder combustion processes of such a dual fuel compression-ignition engine. The model was then employed to examine the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and N2 dilution on NO[subscript x] emissions"--Abstract, page iv.
