Hymns and the music the church sings in worship are tangible means of expressing worship. Volume 1 explores the early church and concludes with the Renaissance era hymnists. Volume 2 begins with the Reformation and extends to the eighteenth-century hymnists and liturgists. Volume 3 engages nineteenth century hymnists to the contemporary movements of the twenty-first century. Each chapter contains these five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The mission of Hymns and Hymnody is (1) to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and (2) to provide a theological analysis of what these composers have communicated in the theology of their hymns. Vol #2 is written in the Key of E - which is one of the easiest keys to start with for a beginner - the main chords being E, A & B7. If you used volume one already, B7 one of the main chords instead of D. What is unique about these chords is the ease of switching between chords. B7 can be a challenge for the beginner because it uses four fingers instead of three, but it's an easy jump from the E chord.The Volume uses only these three chords, all the while staying true to the melody and to the key often found in church hymnals.Each song shows the Key and Time signatures along with suggested strumming and picking patterns.I tried to maintain the correct chords in each song so that you could play along with the other instruments and yet be easy to learn/play. This book is an excellent starting book for a Christian who is familiar with hymns but new to the guitar. Christian guitar teachers could use the book for teaching the new student. Experienced guitar players will be able to use the chords and yet maintain their own specific style that fits their personality.
