South Korea is home to cutting-edge electronics, state-of-the-art medical facilities, and ubiquitous high-speed internet. The country’s meteoric rise from the ashes of the Korean War (1950–1953) to rank among the world’s most technologically advanced societies is often attributed to state-led promotion of science and technology in nation-building projects. With chapters that discuss Korea’s dynastic past, foreign occupations, Cold War geopolitics, postwar rehabilitation in the twentieth century, and the contemporary neoliberal moment, Future Yet to Come argues that a longer historical arc and broader disciplinary approach better elucidate these transformations. The book’s contributors illuminate the “sociotechnical imaginaries” that promoted, sustained, and contested Korea’s scientific, medical, and technological projects in realizing desired futures. Focusing special attention on visual culture and the life sciences, the essays present competing visions held by individuals and institutions of power in the use and purpose of scientific engagements. They demonstrate Korean specificities in culture and language, and the myriad social, political, spatial, and symbolic arrangements that shaped incorporations of and changes to existing systems of knowledge and material practices. Whether discussing moral epistemologies, imperialist or developmentalist thrusts in public health regimes, or new configurations of the “self” enabled by bio industries and media technologies, the book expands both the regional and global understanding of translation, accommodation, and transfer. Tracing imaginaries across the vicissitudes of Korea’s past recalls their history and makes visible their shifts and resilience in dynamic political economies. Future Yet to Come reminds us how deeply intertwined science, medicine, and technology are to not only our polities, corporations, and societies but also the human condition. Bridging histories of science and medicine with anthropologies of technology and the arts, the book will appeal to students and scholars of Korean and East Asian studies as well as those with interests in the comparative history of medicine, STS (society and technology studies), art history, media studies, transnationalism, diaspora, and postcolonialism.

This little gem of a memoir describes Pusan of South Korea in the mid-1990s. A decade when western English teachers descended upon, meandered about, and discovered a place within an ever more modern Korean society. From the point-of-view of Adam Wanderson, you will be led on a first-person narrative of the job, the experiences, the landscape, the expat scenes, and the many colorful western characters that made their way to Korea, to make a new home. All the while, Adam struggles with separating entirely from his past, or entirely embracing the new.

Our Lives In Korea And Korea In Our Lives written by George Ogle and has been published by Xlibris Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-21 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Because he prayed in public for eight men who were tortured, forced to make false confessions and were sentenced to death by South Korea’s military dictatorship, in 1974 George Ogle was deported from the country where he had worked as a missionary for 20 years. Two months later when Dorothy and the four Ogle children left Korea, friends and colleagues commissioned them to “Go tell our story.” After the South Korean people ended the military dictatorship in 1987, the story changed from the struggle for democracy and human rights to a story of the Korean movement for peace and reunifi cation of their divided nation. Compelling and comprehensive, Our Lives in Korea and Korea in Our Lives is not only the Ogles’ personal memoirs of living in South Korea from 1954-1974 and later visiting both the North and South, it is an effort to tell the story of the Korean people as the authors experienced it directly, and as it has come to them by closely following the evolving history through almost 60 years. The book highlights the hope and promise of President Kim DaeJung’s “Sunshine Policy” of constructive engagement with North Korea and is written to give readers around the world a vision for ending the Korean War to bring peace, prosperity and reconciliation to all of the Korean people.

How did a really unhip country suddenly become cool? How could a nation that once banned miniskirts, long hair on men and rock 'n' roll come to mass produce pop music and a K-pop star that would break the world record for the most YouTube hits? Who would have predicted that a South Korean company that used to sell fish and fruit (Samsung) would one day give Apple a run for its money? And just how does South Korea plan to use pop culture to beat America at its own game. Welcome to South Korea: The Brand. In The Birth of Korean Cooljournalist Euny Hong uncovers the roots of the 'Korean Wave': a fanaticism for South Korean pop culture that has enabled them to make the rest of the world a captive market for their products by first becoming the world's number one pop culture manufacturer. South Korea's economic development has been nothing short of staggering - leapfrogging from third-world to first-world in just a few years and continuing to grow at a rapid and unprecedented rate - and for the first time The Birth of Korean Coolwill give readers exclusive insight into the inner workings of this extraordinary country; it's past, present and future.
