The study of ancient Roman land surveyors and the Roman system of property boundaries was carried out in the nineteenth century mainly by German scholars. One of them was Karl Lachmann who published Gromatici Veteres (The Ancient Land Surveyors) [Lachmann 1848], a compilation of texts that address aspects of ancient surveying which are fundamental to Civil Engineering as we know it today. Most of the original texts, as published by Lachmann and with some corrections proposed by Thulin [Thulin 1913], was published together with the English translation by Campbell [Campbell 2000]. A complete re-proposal of Lachmann’s text with the Italian translation was recently proposed by Giacinto Libertini [Libertini 2018]. An important part of this collection of texts, the Liber Coloniarum (The Book of the Colonies), together with a rich cartography illustrating the modern persistences of the ancient agrarian boundaries, was subsequently published by the same author [G. Libertini, Liber Coloniarum - Libro delle Colonie, Istituto di Studi Atellani, Frattamaggiore (Italy), 2018]. In order to allow an understanding of this text for a wider audience, it was necessary to have an English translation, which is offered in this work. The Introduction provides a fascinating description of the ancient Roman surveying and setting of boundary signals. The author has also applied Google Earth® and a special software to many of the Roman settlements in the Lazio and Campania regions to define the property grids (centuriationes and strigationes) that are in Italy from Rome to Nocera Superiore (near Salerno). As with the title of this book, many of the technical descriptions presented here are left in the original Latin. The reader is directed to the Glossary for the meaning of the Latin terms used. "The Satyricon" by Petronius Arbiter is a celebrated work of ancient Roman literature, believed to have been written during the reign of Emperor Nero in the 1st century AD. This sprawling and irreverent novel is a satirical portrayal of Roman society, offering a vivid and often scandalous depiction of life in the Roman Empire. At its core, "The Satyricon" follows the escapades of Encolpius, a young man of uncertain origins, and his companions, as they journey through the cities and countryside of the Mediterranean world. The narrative is episodic in nature, with various adventures and misadventures unfolding along the way, often punctuated by bawdy humor, social critique, and philosophical reflection. One of the most famous episodes of "The Satyricon" is the "Dinner of Trimalchio," a lavish banquet hosted by a wealthy freedman that satirizes the excesses and pretensions of the Roman elite. Through this and other scenes, Petronius offers a biting critique of the decadence, hypocrisy, and moral decay of Roman society, while also providing a fascinating glimpse into its customs, beliefs, and everyday life. Despite its fragmentary nature (much of the original text has been lost), "The Satyricon" remains an invaluable and influential work of literature, admired for its wit, insight, and audacity. It has inspired countless artists, writers, and scholars over the centuries and continues to captivate readers with its vivid portrayal of ancient Rome and its timeless commentary on the human condition.

Film is increasingly engaging the attention of students of history at all levels. In its manifold forms from the newsreel to the 'feature', it is a major source of evidence for, and an important influence upon, contemporary history, and a vivid means of bringing the recent past to life. For earlier periods, it provides a medium in which the often widely dispersed visual evidences of the past can be brought together for the student. It offers the historian a new form in which to interpret and present his subject, and, as television has shown, it is by far the most important vehicle for the presentation of history to mass audiences. The analysis of its content and impact and the exploration of its uses are especially fitted to bring history into an interdisciplinary relationship with other fields, from sociology to the visual arts.
